Chapter 5
I nodded, a wry smile tugging at my lips. But it wasn’t just that. I had lost my baby, too.
Before Kendrick and I got married, Sabrina had made it clear that she didn’t like Laurel. She said that she couldn’t stand how pretentious Laurel was.
At that time, I thought she was just trying to win me over, so I didn’t take her words seriously.
Now, as I looked at her, guilt gnawed at me.
“Just wait here, Roxanne. I’ll drag Kendrick over and make him apologize!” Sabrina declared.
With that, she strode into the ward next door. Moments later, shouting erupted in the hallway.
Then, Sabrina stormed back in, dragging Kendrick by the hair.
“Are you out of your mind? Can’t you see that I’m in the middle of feeding Laurel some oatmeal?” he bellowed.
His face twisted in fury as he turned to me, his eyes buming with resentment. “Roxanne Bradford, you really are something else. You even managed to bribe my sister into speaking for you?
“I can’t believe how scheming you are. How did I ever fall for you?”
Each word sliced through me like a blade. It was as if everything between us meant nothing.
But I had stopped caring long ago. Nothing he said would change anything now.
Of course, Sabrina didn’t let Laurel off the hook, either. She had them both scrambling, flustered and humiliated.
“Do you even know that Roxanne had a miscarriage? She’s still weak, yet you’re taking care of another woman.”
Kendrick simply scoffed and shook his head. “Bullshit! She was never pregnant. How could she have had a miscarriage? Don’t let her fool you. She’s the best liar
I’ve ever met.”
That was the last straw. He could insult me all he wanted, but he had no right to dismiss my child.
I staggered out of bed and slapped him hard.
Then, I grabbed my medical reports and abortion paperwork and hurled them at him.
Kendrick caught the papers. In an instant, his expression fell as his fingers clenched around them.
“That’s not possible…” he muttered in disbelief.
He had spent every waking moment doting on Laurel, so it was no surprise that he never spared a single thought for me.
Right then, Laurel clung to him. She appeared frail and delicate, as if she might collapse at any second.
“I never thought that you’d lose the baby. This is all my fault. I should just die! A life for a life,” she choked out.
Once again, she bolted toward the window, feigning another suicide attempt.
But Kendrick held her back, his jaw tightening. With a deep frown, he muttered, “Forget it. Consider it Roxanne’s way of making amends.”
I stared at them, incredulous. The two of them were putting on quite the performance.
I chuckled in exasperation. Then, I asked, “What exactly did I do wrong?”
Ever since Laurel came into the picture, Kendrick’s attitude toward me completely shifted. was as if he had become an entirely different person overnight.
I truly didn’t understand what I had done to deserve this.
Beside him, Laurel wore a mask of guilt while trying to stop him from speaking,
Nevertheless, Kendrick spat, “Drop the act. If you hadn’t sent people to assault Laurel in some abandoned building, she wouldn’t be like this. She wouldn’t flinch every time she sees you.
“Do you have any idea what you did to her? She’s claustrophobic because of you! You trampled on her dignity!”
I couldn’t make sense of his words. When had I ever done anything to hurt Laurel?
At that moment, Laurel shrank behind Kendrick, her eyes wide with fear.
“You probably don’t remember. Back in university, I accidentally bumped into you while walking. Then, you dragged me to an abandoned building…”
Her voice trembled with sobs, but before she could finish, she completely broke down.
Suddenly, something clicked.
There had been an incident during my sophomore year. A young lady had bumped into me on campus. But instead of apologizing, she cursed me out.
“So, it was you,” I said.
Kendrick, however, took my words as an admission of guilt. Without hesitation, he launched into a tirade of accusations.
My patience snapped, and I cut him off. “All I said was that I remembered her. Did I admit to taking her to an abandoned building? It looks like you’re not just blind. You’re deaf, too.”
The whole scandal had been a big deal back then. But I had nothing to do with it.
