Chapter 8
Gideon had made a reservation at one of my favorite restaurants. I couldn’t consume alcohol, so he’d had them prepare grape juice for me.
It suddenly occurred to me that someone who truly loved me wouldn’t need me to say anything. He would consider my needs and desires and prepare everything necessary.
Now that Gideon and I had reconciled, the upper crust mocked Rowan, ridiculing him for trading something precious for something worthless.
Meanwhile, Riley continued sharing updates of her love life with Rowan. One day, she shared a photo of him taking her out for an expensive meal. The next day, she showed the thousand roses he’d gotten for her. Then, she showed a photo of Rowan taking her to meet his parents.
I couldn’t help laughing at that. Rowan’s parents were the most materialistic people I’d ever met. Even when I, the heiress of the Rivers family, went to visit them, they scorned me and my family. They were afraid I wouldn’t be of much help to Rowan because my family’s business wasn’t local.
How could they possibly be happy with Riley, who came from an ordinary family?
They wouldn’t have any issues if Rowan were just playing around with her. She would only be kicked out if he brought her home to meet them.
Sure enough, Riley’s social media updates ended there.
A few days later, I heard about Rowan getting into an accident during a race. This time, he’d genuinely gotten into an accident.
He was clipped by another racer and sent flying because he’d been going too quickly. He was fully geared up in protective armor, so he shouldn’t have sustained any major injuries. However, the cheap helmet he wore had shattered upon coming into contact with the ground, leaving his head unprotected.
He lost consciousness on the spot and was taken to the emergency room. Then, he was transferred to the ICU.
I couldn’t help but sigh. Rowan would never have ended up like that if he’d worn the helmets I’d gotten him. I didn’t know whether to say he was dumb or too love–brained–he’d dared to wear a cheap helmet meant for riding scooters onto the racetrack.
