Chapter 4
The motorcycle championship finals were three days later. A new name appeared on the list of contestants—Geraldine Rivers.
Rowan was flirting with Riley, who was in the stands, with his eyes. He almost fell off his motorcycle when he heard the announcer call my name.
My gaze turned mocking underneath my protective goggles when I saw this. I watched as he scanned the crowd of racers, his gaze lingering on me for a moment before looking away in disappointment.
I was dressed in a full-body racing suit, with my chest and back armor secured in place and my knees heavily padded. My signature long hair was tucked away beneath my helmet—anyone would mistake me for a man. It’d be a miracle if he could recognize me.
There was half an hour to go before the race started. Riley ran down to the racetrack to bring Rowan a drink. He took off his cheap helmet to see that she didn’t look too pleased.
“I heard Geraldine’s name over the speakers earlier, Ro. Could she be…”
He gulped down some water, his gaze mocking as he said, “You saw what an idiot she looked like that night—she almost killed herself! How can she be in this race? Besides, I looked around. There aren’t any women here. It must just be a mistake.”
Riley sighed in relief. Then, her expression turned shy. “Good luck, Ro. All my classmates look up to you—they all bought tickets to see you! Don’t forget what you promised me.”
Rowan’s gaze flickered. Then, he said, “Got it.”
She’d begged him to announce to the world that she was his girlfriend, but he’d refrained from making any promises because of Geraldine. However, he’d given in after that night.
Still, why did he look forward to seeing her? Perhaps he would give her a chance to be with him as long as she showed up to beg him to stay.
He surreptitiously scanned the stands, but the familiar figure he sought wasn’t there. He lowered his gaze and placed a hand over his heart. It felt empty like it was missing something.
