Chapter 12
Bradley questioned himself, replaying every moment with Alice in his mind. Every little oddity now loomed large, piece by piece revealing the truth. Bradley had no choice but to admit that Alice might have known all along.
At this thought, his knees buckled. He clutched the rotting infant to his chest. He couldn’t imagine the depth of Alice’s despair when she learned the truth–so much that she ripped their unborn baby from her body and presented it to him like a gift.
He was on the verge of collapse. As he held onto what was little more than a chunk of decaying flesh, his eyes were bloodshot.
He swore that once he found Alice, he would make this right. He had already owed her too much. This baby would be the last. From now on, he wouldn’t spare a single glance at Maisy. He would devote himself to Alice, heart and soul.
Bradley trembled in silence. It took him a long time to gather himself before he finally stood up and tossed the infant away.
“Have you found her yet?”
He quickly regained his usual composure. Or rather, he had never truly lost it. After all, that was how he had deceived Alice for so long.
Unfortunately, Jacob still had no news and could only shake his head helplessly.
Bradley knew that Alice must be furious this time. She was furious enough to disappear on purpose. But that was fine. He had all the time in the world to coax her back.
They had lost a child, but they could have another. And this time, it would be theirs alone. He would never give another thing to Maisy.
Pressing his fingers against his temple, he decided to search for Alice himself. As long as she knew he regretted everything, she would come back to him.
Confident in that belief, Bradley headed downstairs, just in time to see a delivery man approaching the door.
“Bradley Sharp? Got a package for you.”
Bradley frowned. Who would send him something?
Before he could react, Jacob had already signed for it. The next second, he let out an excited gasp. “It’s from Mrs. Sharp! She sent this!”
Bradley’s face lit up. Alice had reached out to him! He knew it. After all these years of marriage, she loved him too much to just walk away. This had to be her way of testing him. Inside must be the key to finding her.
A victorious smile played on his lips as he tore the package open. Then, his expression froze.
Inside was a divorce agreement.
He felt mocked and enraged. How could Alice have dared to play such a cruel joke? He quickly flipped to the last page and saw her signature–Alice Campbell.
A deafening roar filled his head. For the first time, real panic crashed over him.
How dared she? How dared she try to divorce him?
