Staring at the lady who practically called me a whore in front of a room full of customers, and most especially, Aidan Graham, many thoughts raced through my mind.
This wasn’t the first time that someone had been rude to me because they somehow thought that they were better than me since I had a child at such a young age, so I wasn’t too bothered.
Aidan, on the other hand, looked like he was ready to commit first–degree m*rder within the next few seconds if caution wasn’t taken. His eyes burned like molten lava in the strange lady’s direction, so I quickly thought of a way to end the scene before it escalated.
Like I said earlier, I didn’t want any bad dust for my business.
So I spoke. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but I don’t understand what you mean. This is a place of business, and we have customers who would appreciate not being…”
“I’ll make you understand,” the petite lady in the blonde wavy hair cut me off, gritting her teeth so hard, and pointing a disgusted look at me.
Now, I was beginning to get pissed.
Angry green veins popped from her forehead as she spat word after word to me. “First, you waltz into this pack like you own the place just because the alpha favored you, and you push out a baby whose father is probably incarcerated in a pack facility somewhere.”
Wrong, lady. He’s right behind you, and he’s about to bite your head off with the way he’s growling.
She went on. “You then go on to steal an opportunity that should be for actual pack members like me! Like, who the hell do you think you are?”
My smile faltered, and I thought in my head, to hell with being nice. Years of being a one–man team taught me to stand up for myself whenever Karens like these tried to intimidate me, and today wasn’t going to be any different.
Before I could get my words together, a deep angry voice thundered from behind us, making the small lady yelp in surprise.
“And what makes you think she stole it?” It was Aidan. And he looked PISSED!
“From the looks of it, this appears to be a business that someone raised from the ground up with their blood and sweat, and your filthy opinions about them aren’t needed here,” Aidan barked, his eyes going completely dark with rage.
The lady cowered under his authoritative tone, and my words died in my throat. Aidan’s alpha tone didn’t work on me, so I just stared in shock.
The lines were blurring because Aidan was… is… supposed to be in one of my black books. I should hate him. No. I hate him, but it’s hard to do so when he stands up for me like this.
It’s hard to do when he looks every bit of the powerful alpha that I knew him to be, and a million times more.
But he hurt me, and he could do it again, so I found my voice quickly.
“I don’t need you to speak up for me, Aidan. I can handle this.” I turned to the lady, but she brushed me off like a fly.
“She shouldn’t be here,” the lady continued, seeming to have shaken the effects of Aidan’s alpha tone off her for a bit. “I am interested in this building, and I should be the one to have it, not her,” she said.
Aidan suddenly went calm, but I could hear the ice dripping from his next words. “I can assure you that you will never get your limbs anywhere near this building, or anyone miles away from this area for that matter.”
The smile that followed his threat was scary, but intimately warming at the same time. That was because, in years, not many people stood up for me the way Aidan just did.

It took a while, but soon, the lady was shown out of my diner, calm was restored, and all the customers went on with their meals like nothing had happened here.
Aidan, though, was still very much present and towering, and different parts of me rose to life, including my wolf.
Aidan stood on the receiving side of the long counter, looking far too formal for a Friday afternoon, but not in any way out of place.
I crossed my hands over my chest to keep my hammering heart from flying out of my chest, and to keep myself from throwing my arms over Aidan’s shoulder.
“You shouldn’t have gotten involved. I had it under control,” I said to him firmly.
Aidan didn’t look pleased, but his time was quiet regardless. “How often does something like that happen? Them disrespecting you?”
I ignored his question and changed the topic quickly. “How long will you be staying in the pack for?”
He gave me a crooked smile, lighting up his perfectly handsome face, but I could see the pain he hid underneath it. I knew Aidan like that. “Can’t wait to get rid of me, huh?”
Before I could answer, a customer’s voice pulled my attention, which I was grateful for. I didn’t know how much longer I could stand Aidan’s presence without my heart ripping from my chest.
I turned to the customer but spared Aidan one last glance before giving the customer my full attention. “I’ll appreciate it if you don’t show up unexpectedly to my work place. I think I can handle you being in Vermont pack for the multipack moon meet, so I will.”
“But we have a lot to talk about,” Aidan countered.
I nodded my head. “Yes, but we really don’t need to say them. The time for that is way past.”
I turned away, letting him know that that was the end of the conversation. I was protecting myself, my heart, and my baby. When I watched him finally walk out of the diner dejectedly, I could breathe a little easier.
If that was what I told myself to be able to get through this, then so be it. Aidan was heartbreak, and I wasn’t ready to have my heart broken again.
After attending to the customer and watching her leave the store, I caught Jenna’s suspicious stare from the kitchen door.
“What?” I asked with a frown.
“Do I want to know who that gent was? He was fine as hell, and he looked so into you,” she joked.
I shook my head because me and Aidan’s story couldn’t be told in one sitting.
So, I answered with a sigh. “Trust me, you do not want to know.”
