I briskly changed into a more formal outfit and made my way over to the conference room of Collin’s pack, and by the time I got there, the seats were almost all taken as most of the alphas were already present.
Finding a place to take my seat, I checked my watch and prayed that whatever they wanted to discuss in the meeting was done quickly so that I could return.
Movement from the opposite direction of my seat caught my attention as I scrolled on my phone to get some work done, and on lifting my head to see what it was, Collin was sitting directly opposite me, and I internally sighed.
“You are a bit late for a meeting that was supposed to start twenty minutes ago, Alpha Aidan,” he said, grinning in false respect.
I looked around us before I spoke back. “Good thing the meeting hadn’t started then, right? Why don’t you be mature and find somewhere else to sit, because we both know that the two of us are the last people to want to be around each other,” I glared.
The only other seat that I could find free was at the head of the table, and nobody was allowed to take that seat because everyone present in the room was on the apex of the pyramid in their respective packs, and as such, had no superiors.
Since we were all in the same spot, we were all seen as equal. The head of the table was reserved for the head, and here, no one was anybody’s head.
“You know that I can’t do that,” he said, sucking in a sharp breath. “If anyone should be changing locations, it would be you, because we both know that you could have avoided coming into my pack, but you came here to rile me up.”
“Get your head out of your ass, Collin,” I said from the other side of the long table. “Everyone is meant to be in attendance, and if I am here, it doesn’t mean it’s because of you.”
He scoffed. “So after your pack of mongrels destroyed my new line of trade just outside my territory last month, I’m expected to just believe that you’re not here for more?”
Hate filled each of his words, and as he boiled in anger, I saw some similarities between Alpha Collin and myself. I shook it off.
“If you hadn’t started by throwing the first punch, we wouldn’t be here, okay?”
My knowledge of why our packs were sworn enemies was still unclear to me, so I had no idea why he was this mad.
Our voices were beginning to morph into defensive growls, and it was against the rules to attack an outsider at events like these, so I turned my attention to my phone without waiting for Collin to respond.
Thankfully, the meeting was about to get started, so our little exchange of words died down.
Topics for discussion were raised, and each Alpha brought forward their suggestions and ideas to life as to how we could make our packs more habitable for our people.
Trades and exchanges were talked about, the laws guiding us as a continent of supernaturals were brought up, and we also delved into alliance discussions with each other. Alphas renewed their relationship with other packs and formed new ones with emerging and already successful packs.
Attica pack didn’t have many active enemies except for external obstacles and Vermont pack, but we didn’t necessarily need to formalize alliances with other packs.
We had more than enough resources to take care of ourselves, but we wouldn’t hesitate to send help to packs that were in need.
Different alphas tried to sugar talk me into formalizing our alliances with their packs, but I respectfully declined and offered our help if they ever needed it instead.”
Finally, we discussed the plague of the StoneWolves.

It had been years since StoneWolves were rampant, but it didn’t mean they weren’t around. My pack had been successful in keeping the few ones that were lurking far away, but maybe other packs weren’t so lucky, and now was their chance to ask for help.
“Are any persons having trouble with them?” One alpha asked.
Many murmurs of disagreement filled the air until another spoke.
“They aren’t plaguing my pack, but we’ve been having cases of them trying to get inside our territory. It’s nothing we can’t handle, as the key is to keep our people from leaving the pack and turning into one of them.”
Incoherent grunts of agreement came from all corners of the table.
Soon, the meeting was coming to an end, and I itched to take my leave.
After exchanging handshakes with as many alphas as I could, I exited the room.
Thinking of making my way back to my hotel, thoughts of Tara crossed my mind.
My time on this pack was running out, and if my earlier interaction with Collin told me anything, it was that he didn’t want me any more than two seconds in this pack.
I hadn’t been able to have much conversation of meaning with Tara, so I needed to take another route.
Realizing that I didn’t have her house address, the logical part of me told me to wait until tomorrow when it was possible to find her at her diner.
The other part of me who yearned for things to be right between us three decided to take my chances and go over to the only place I could think of to find her. Her diner.
I got into my rental car and drove over, and as I did, I thought of what I was going to say to get her to let me in, if only by a fraction.
I thought of Nadia, the young lady who was slowly having me wrapped around her fingers.
For the last eight years, I’d worked my butt off for the people I called my own. My pack members.
I was grateful for the family I had, but it was incomplete. Now, my sleepless night would have a purpose. I wanted everything for Tara and Nadia.
The drive to Tara’s diner was quick, but I was met with disappointment when the entire building was closed with no trace of light in it.
“So stupid,” I muttered to myself.
How could I have thought that Tara wouldn’t be home with her child at this time?
I was about to turn around and leave when a bulb lit up from one of the windows which must have been her office, and my heart lit up in the same way.
Quickly alighting from the car like it was on fire, I moved toward the diner with purpose in my heart, but also with said heart in my mouth.
