Even after the douchebag, Collin left and was nowhere to be seen, Nadia still feared for her safety. She was still tense, and her large hazel eyes welled up with unshed tears.
All I wanted was for that feeling to go away and never return.
I wanted to know everything about Tara’s and Nadia’s relationship with Collin, but I didn’t know if Tara would be okay with me pressing Nadia for answers, so I decided to keep it simple.
Taking her cold hands into mine, I squatted to her level and smiled at her.
“Hey, pretty, don’t be scared. He’s gone now, and he won’t be able to harm you on my watch,” I said to Nadia.
It seemed like she didn’t believe me, but she nodded anyway. “You’ll stay and protect me?” She asked with glistening eyes.
I nodded. There was nothing I wanted more than that. “Yes, Nadia. Anyone who tries to get to you will have to go through me first, and I promise you that they won’t be able to do so.”
The well of tears cleared from her eyes as a small smile lifted her face, pumping my heart in the process. She asked, “You will protect Mommy too, right?”
“Of course. The both of you,” I said, rubbing the back of her hand gently.
With a deep breath, the fire that I recognized from earlier returned to her eyes, and the fear was gone.
Nadia tilted her head to the side as she went on to ask. “How will you protect me and Mommy? Alpha Collin is big and strong. He’s…he’s scary,” she admitted with a pout.
A soft chuckle escaped my lips because little Nadia didn’t know what her dad was made and capable of.
“Well, he might be, but I’m bigger and stronger. I’m an alpha too, and I have a pack of my own that is twice as big as this. I can stop him with my eyes closed.”
An impressed gasp escaped Nadia’s lips, and all I could do was admire her and laugh. I went on. “Do you want to see just how strong I can be to prove to you that I can protect both you and your mother?”
She squealed and bounced on her feet, and a string of “Yes yes yes,” followed.
Laughing, I called to my wolf from within, and he quickly surfaced. The effects of his contact turned my eyes to an almost blindingly bright color, and my fangs unsheathed with a vicious snarl.
It wasn’t too much to scare her, and when I heard Nadia say, “Woahh,” I knew that she was as impressed as I wanted her to be.
Pushing my wolf to the back of my mind, my eyes returned to normal, and I retracted my fangs.
“See?” I said. “There’s more where that came from, and I won’t hesitate to use it to fight for you and your mom, okay?”
“Okay,” she nodded, and before I could get a second to process my thoughts, a tight bear hug.
Vadia threw her small arms around my neck in
“Woah there, kiddo,” I chuckled, surprised by her outburst of emotions, and at the same time, filled with a sense of pride and joy.
I hugged her back gently, squeezing my eyes shut to push back the emotions that clogged my throat. A little more of this, and
I would shed tears. That was a lot for someone who could not remember the last time he got emotional.
I missed eight years of this. Eight years that I wasn’t ever going to get back. Not only that, but I also robbed both Nadia and Tara of the same eight years. I robbed them of the experience that could have had as part of a complete family.
There was so much to make up for, and I was going to do th

After we broke the hug, Nadia pointed in the direction of her toys. “Do you want to see my toys?”

I sighed, hesitating for a moment as Tara’s words replayed in my head. She didn’t want me anywhere near her place of work, and the last thing I wanted to do was upset her.
Besides, Jace, my beta, told me earlier that he might have some information about the anonymous notes I received, so it was best I attended to that.
So I responded. “That would be really cool, but don’t you think your mom would want your help inside?” I checked my watch. “It’s getting late, so I should also get going.”
“I guess so,” she said. A frown appeared on her face, and I thought of a way to lift it off.
“I’ll tell you what,” I said, and her eyes lit up expectantly. “I’ll try my best to see you again really soon. I promise. And you should really go inside,” I said with a playful smack of my lips before I whispered. “I think you have a present.”
Nadia gasped, covering her mouth with her small hands and forgetting all about her earlier grumbles. “Really? From who?” She asked eagerly.
I shrugged. “I think your mom would be the best person to disclose that information to you.”
She didn’t even wait for me to land. With one last quick hug that made me want this moment to last forever, she ran to the back door that connected her little playground with Tara’s diner, and she pulled it open.
Turning back around to send me a quick wave, Nadia fled inside, and I could hear her screaming for her mom.
The smile remained on my face for the next couple of hours, something which was very unusual in my life, and a feeling akin to content spread through me for the rest of the day.
The welcome party that was planned for the guests of the Multipack Moon meet was scheduled for this evening, and having only a few hours until then, I decided to freshen up.
I went back to my hotel suite, and on getting inside, Jace was nursing a glass of wine in the bar. His eyes silently tracked my movements, and with a stern voice, I asked him.
“Will you tell me what you’ve found or will you continue staring at me for no reason?”
Swirling the liquid in his cup, he spoke. “You know the last thing I want to be to you is rude, Alpha,”
“Then don’t be,” I said, cutting off his words.
He sighed but spoke on regardless. That was one thing I admired about my right hand, Jace. He was fierce and loyal, but as true as they come. He said what needed to be said without fear of anyone. Me especially.
“Coming here was a bad idea. We don’t know what Collin could be planning, and I wouldn’t want us to find out. If you insist that we stay here for the multipack moon meet, we should do so wisely,” he said, and I could hear the accusatory undertone.
Jace must have found out about my interactions with Tara.
“What are you saying?” I asked him.
“I think we should lay low for the duration of being here, and stay away from people that could bring trouble for us.”
Jace didn’t know about Tara being more than just a pretty face to me, and now wasn’t the time to discuss that, so I changed the topic.
“About the anonymous messages. What did you find?”
