Chapter 7
Seeing David’s name on the screen, Erik gave me a gentle smile and handed the phone back to me. “Go ahead and take it. You’ll handle it well–I trust you.”
I nodded and answered the call. “Hello?”
There was silence on the other end, which made me frown slightly. After a long pause, I finally heard Bob’s voice. “Cora, the young master is drunk… since the day you got your marriage certificate, he’s been drinking heavily.”
“For the past few days, he hasn’t gone to the office. He’s been in the room you used to stay in, drinking nonstop and… murmuring your name.”
He had once claimed Helena was the love of his life, that he would give up everything for her. Now that I had left, what was the point of this behavior?
I spoke calmly into the phone, “Bob, please let him know–it’s over. There’s no going back.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Bob added, “Cora, forgive me for saying this, but perhaps the young master doesn’t even understand his own feelings. Maybe it’s only now, after you left, that he realizes you’re the one he truly cares about!”
“Why don’t you come back, just to see him one last time, even if it’s just for a proper goodbye?”
I refused immediately. “No. We said our goodbyes on my birthday.”
Without waiting for Bob to say more, I hung up.
The next day, Mrs. Johnson called me. She wanted to meet and say goodbye. She had watched me grow up and always looked out for me while I was with the Johnson family. I agreed and arranged to meet her in the afternoon.
When Erik saw me getting ready, he asked kindly, “Where are you headed? Want me to drive you?”
I replied, “Don’t you still have work to take care of?”

“There’s always work to be done,” he said, then added, “Wait for me–I’ll get the car.”
When we arrived at the meeting spot, Erik waited in the car while I went in alone to the café. However, the person inside wasn’t Mrs. Johnson–it was David.
