Chapter 15
It was getting close to midnight. Naturally, Meredith spent the night in the guest bedroom of Luke’s villa. After bidding goodnight, Meredith lay in bed and started scrolling through TikTok, showing some of the videos from where she used to come from.
Suddenly, a video title caught hereve
The title read, “Joshua Cortchen Steps Down as CEO of Gretchen Holdings Due to Personal Issues; Eldest Son Jonah Gretchen Takes the Helm to Lead a New Chapter
Meredith was shocked when she read the news.
Joshua’s affair with Angel was exposed shortly after she left the country. Gretchen Holdings was a multinational company with branches everywhere, including in Newland, where she was now
But after the scandal broke out, it wasn’t just the domestic share prices that phonged–even their intemational branches were greatly affected too. Within the blink of an eye, they’d deregistered their international branch companies, including the one in Newland.
Meredith thought that she would feel happy and liberated when she read this kind of news. After all, Joshua had hurt her very deeply.
To her surprise, Meredith felt nothing. It was as though joshua was nobody but a stranger to her.
As she thought of this, Meredith scrolled down to the next video. It wasn’t until her eyelids started drooping that she finally put her phone away and fell into deep sleep.
Early the next morning, Meredith woke up and saw that Luke had already prepared breakfast for her.
After she was done with breakfast, Luke handed her an invitation to a ball.
“What’s this?” Meredith asked, talding the card from him.
Loke replied, “It’s an invitation to the Fall Festival Ball. They invited every foreigner from our country to attend. You can go and have a look if you’re interested, But if not, then pretend I never said anything
A hint of regret flashed in Luke’s eyes when he said that
He’d known Meredith for awhile, and he had never see her participate in any balls, events, or festivals while she was here. It wasn’t until he got closer to her that he leamed Meredith preferred the peace and quiet. She wasn’t fond of loud and noisy places.
He’d only given bet the invitation because he wanted her to go out and have some fun and perhaps make a few new friends in the process. He’d completely forgotten that she prefered to be insolitude
Meredith didn’t answer him right away. Instead, she asked curiously, “What about you? Do you feel like going?”
Luke was stunned at first, but he quickly broke into a sinile,
“I’m fine whether I go or not.”
Meredith rubbed the Invitation card between her fingers for a long time as she debated with herself.
Actually, the loved going out and having fun. She liked participating in lively events. However, ever since faking her death, she’d stopped going out altogether because she didn’t want to be seen as much as possible.
someone Joshua knew saw these videos of heronline and sent
The reason was that people at these festivals often liked filming videos and posting them online, It som them to him, then everything she’d done up until that point would have gone entirely to waste
Also, just to be even more careful, her cafe only provided takeaway services with a tiny window up front. Most of her customers only knew her by her voice and had never seen her before.
Meredith chewed on her lower lip and looked at Loke apologetically.
“I’m sorry, Luke, but I don’t think I be attending.”
Luke smiled and told her that he understood Afterchatting for a while moce, he finally got up and sent her home.
On the day of the fall festival, Meredith was happily snacking on the pumpkin pies Luke sent her beforehand while admiring the tull moon in the sky.
It had been a long while since she’d spent the fall festival on her own like this.
Betoon her family divorced, the festival she used to look forward to the most after Christmas was the fall festival.
On that day, her father would purposely fly home no matter which country he was in the world that day, and her mother would make a whole table full of her favorite food for dinner
After moving in with josta, he would also make sure he got off work as early as possible to spend the tall festival with her.
It was just that he started accompanying Angel after that,
It was since then that Meredith started spending her tall festival nights alone.
She rubbed away the unshed tears in her eyes and ate the last of her slice of pumpkin pie. Just as she was about to get ready for bed, someone suddenly rang her doorbell.
She opened the door and saw Lake’s familiar face smiling down at her.
“Happy fall festival, Merry.”
