Chapter 9
On her final day at the hospital, Sylvie asked Larry and Carolyn to go to her villa and pick up her luggage, as well as Remy’s ashes.
Two nurses came by for their rounds and casually chatted about the latest gossip.
“Did you hear? The CEO of Parker Group is at our hospital. He booked every hospital room and called in every specialist with a professor’s title just to treat his girlfriend, who simply has a mild fever.”
“That’s ridiculously over the top. It sounds like something straight out of a romance drama. Who even is she? How did she manage to win over Soren Parker, who basically runs Jastron? Do you know anything about her?”
The other nurse shook her head but then suddenly remembered something. Her eyes lit up as she turned to Sylvie.
“You came in around the same time as that woman. Do you know her? Is she some rich socialite?”
Sylvie’s lashes fluttered briefly before she dropped her gaze, her voice soft and distant. “No, I don’t. Maybe she really is the female lead from some romance drama, just like you said. How would someone like me know anything about her?”
The nurses bought her explanation. Once they took out her IV, they exchanged a few more casual remarks before heading out.
Silence filled the room. Sylvie picked up her phone and quietly deleted Soren’s contact details. As she finished doing that, Larry and Carolyn called to say they would be at the hospital soon.
A caregiver helped Sylvie into a wheelchair and wheeled her out of the room.
The elevator doors opened, and Sylvie saw Roy standing there. He greeted her politely, holding up the folder in his hand, his tone formal yet respectful.
“Ms. Clarke, after you signed the termination agreement last time, I unexpectedly had to go out of town for work for two weeks. This document hasn’t been submitted yet, but don’t worry, I’ll turn it over to Mr. Parker immediately.”
Sylvie was about to reply when she heard Soren’s voice behind her. She turned and met his cold stare.
“How many times has this happened? She still won’t sign it?”
Roy hesitated and started to speak, but Sylvie interrupted him, “See for yourself.”
As she spoke, she took the folder from Roy’s hands and placed it directly into Soren’s.
Seeing her blank expression and the hesitant, uncertain look on Roy’s face, a flicker of suspicion crossed Soren’s eyes. He’d just begun to open the folder when his phone rang.
“Soren, where are you? The nurse said it’s time for your checkup. You should hurry back.”
He quickly shut the half–opened folder and shoved it back into Roy’s hands. “Don’t waste your time checking. I already know she didn’t sign it. Next time, draft a new agreement and raise the offer to 30 times the original amount.”
After issuing the command, Soren turned to Sylvie, his voice firm and insistent. “This is the fourth time I’ve upped the offer. Don’t let me down this time.”
With that, he turned and headed straight for the VIP hospital room.
Roy gaped at Sylvie. “Ms. Clarke…”
Sylvie had heard Zoe’s voice and knew Soren was rushing off to see the one he loved. As she watched him leave, she smiled, her heart finally at ease.
“Nothing in this world matters to him except Zoe. You can tell him I’ve let him go when he’s ready to hear it.”
The elevator doors opened with a quiet chime. Larry and Carolyn walked up to Sylvie with smiles on their faces. They draped a coat over her shoulders and guided her out of the hospital, making their way to the airport.
It was bright and sunny outside. Sylvie raised her hand to feel the sun’s warmth, and the chill that had taken root inside her gradually melted away.
Just before boarding, she pulled out the three plane tickets and smiled at Larry and Carolyn. “Mom, Dad, let’s leave the past behind and start afresh. This time, I’m not sitting on the sidelines. I’m going to be the one and only irreplaceable main character in my own life!”
