Chapter 21
Lance’s face inched closer until his long lashes brushed Sylvie’s forehead. Their breaths intertwined, and the fresh scent of grass filled her mouth.
He placed soft, fleeting kisses on her lips, like a dragonfly gliding over the surface of a pond. Sylvie didn’t pull away.
Taking that as her consent, Lance suddenly cupped the back of her head and deepened the kiss. The clean taste of grass lingered on their lips and tongues as his kisses grew more intense, leaving her breathless.
At last, he placed one last soft kiss on her lips before slowly pulling away, unwilling to let go. Sylvie’s face flushed bright red. She leaned against his chest, trying to catch her breath.
“Sorry…” Lance looked at her with a kind of innocent sincerity. “I’ve never kissed anyone, so I didn’t realize it would hit you this hard.”
Sylvie lifted her head to meet his gaze. “Lance, was that your first kiss?”
A playful grin spread across his face. “Yeah, it was. You’re the first person I’ve ever kissed and the first person I’ve ever had feelings for.” Those words made Sylvie’s heart race.
“But I guess I got lucky. The first person I fell for actually said yes.” Still holding her hand, Lance smiled like he’d just won something priceless. “So, my girlfriend, what do you say we spend the rest of the vacation at my place?”
He gave her a wink, and when she agreed, his laughter bubbled up.
Soren woke up in the hospital bed, with Zoe standing beside him, her expression grave.
“Zoe… Zoe, what are you doing here?”
Zoe looked down at him, her gaze cold and unreadable. “Soren, even the way you say my name isn’t as affectionate as it used to be.”
Unsure of what to say, Soren turned his head, avoiding her eyes. “Zoe, just go. I’ll transfer five billion dollars to your account.”
Zoe scoffed. “First, you gave Sylvie five billion dollars to leave. Now you’re pulling the same stunt with me?”
Her laughter echoed harshly in the quiet room. “Mr. Parker, is money really all you have left?”
Soren frowned. “Zoe, I hurt you, but trying to force things between us won’t make it right. I can’t lie about how I truly feel.” “You’re pathetic, Soren.”
At some point, Zoe suddenly found a sharp knife in her hand. Its blade gleamed, catching the sudden pallor on Soren’s face. In an instant, the tip of the knife pressed against his neck.
“Soren, I’ll ask you one last time. Why did you come here?”
Soren’s brow furrowed. “I came to apologize to Sylvie.”
The cold blade grazed his neck.
“Why did you leave me for Sylvie?”
After a brief pause, Soren replied, “Because I suddenly realized I don’t feel the same way about you anymore. The person I love has always been Sylvie.” Zoe sneered. The knife traced a thin line of blood across Soren’s neck.
“Soren, why won’t you just come back to me? The system told me everything. I’ll take care of you like I used to if you return. We can forget all of this and go back to how things were. Wouldn’t that be better?”
“You already knew about the system?” Soren asked, his shock evident.
Tears clung to Zoe’s jaw, and her gaze was cold. “It told me you, the male lead, were supposed to be with me. We were meant to stay together forever and be the happiest couple in this story. But… you broke your promise. You threw it all away for a side character and left me behind.”
Rage twisted her face as she pressed the knife harder against Soren’s throat. He grabbed her wrist and threw her to the ground with brutal force. The blade hit the floor with a sharp, metallic clang.
“You’ve lost your mind, Zoe!”
