Chapter 19
“What?” Soren narrowed his eyes and scoffed.
“Or else you’ll be erased as corrupted data. Your worsening health is also part of the system’s adjustments.”
Soren burst into laughter. “You’ve had me trapped for so long. Isn’t that enough? Now you’re trying to get rid of me, too?”
The system hesitated before responding, “Soren, do you know why Sylvie finally signed the termination agreement after rejecting it for so long?”
Soren paused, his voice rising. “Why?”
“The first person to uncover the truth about this world wasn’t you. It was Sylvie. But she didn’t fully understand it the way you did. She was too focused on you and couldn’t let go. That’s why the plot deviated.”
The system continued, “She stayed when she should’ve left, and because of that, Zoe ended up following Sylvie’s plot instead, ultimately leaving heartbroken for a foreign country. To avenge Zoe, you had Larry and Carolyn kill themselves, and you tortured Sylvie to death.”
Soren’s eyes tumed bloodshot as he heard Sylvie had died at his own hands. His heart twisted in agony.
“So, I showed her the path the plot was meant to follow. I wanted to set things right. But I never expected you, the male lead, to deviate from the plot. And no matter how many times I tried to bring you back on track, it never worked.”
The system sounded exhausted. “If you go back to Zoe now, there might still be a chance to fix this.”
“No… Not happening,” Soren growled. “I’m done being your puppet. I’ll live on my own terms.”
“Soren, you can’t,” the system said flatly. “You were written as the male lead. You were never meant to think for yourself. If you keep resisting the plot, this world will keep falling apart until there’s nothing left, not even you.”
After a brief silence, Soren suddenly asked, “What about Sylvie?”
“Sylvie will be the new female lead and live her life however she wants.”
Soren let out a sigh of relief upon hearing this. “If that’s the case, I have even less reason to go back to Zoe. I’ll follow my heart and love Sylvie.”
Realizing that convincing him otherwise was futile, the system opted to say less. “Since you’ve made up your mind, I won’t be showing up anymore.”
With those final words, the system vanished.
“Sylvie…” Soren tightened his fists at his sides. “If this is how it is, I’ll admit my feelings for you.”
Sylvie and Lance sat in the seaside tavern, sharing a quiet look. The waiter brought them one Caledran dish after another.
“I’m sorry for getting you involved in this,” Sylvie said.
Lance gave her a gentle look and replied, “Sylvie, it’s not your fault. Besides, I’m the one chasing after you now.”
He poured the deep–red wine into her glass and added, “Try the local wine.”
Sylvie raised her glass and gently clinked it with Lance’s.
“Congratulations, Sylvie, on taking the first step toward your new life.”
As they sipped the rich wine, Lance’s smile was especially warm.
“I honestly wouldn’t know what to do without you.” Sylvie looked at Lance with gratitude. “I didn’t know you could box.”
“There’s still a lot you don’t know about me,” Lance said with a grin. “But if you’re up for getting to know me better, I’d be the happiest guy in the world.”
Sylvie’s cheeks flushed, and she quickly turned her head away.
“The decor here really gives off a cozy, coastal vibe,” she said, her voice wavering at the end.
Lance stood up, moved closer, and gently kissed her. “Sorry, I just wanted to pick up where we left things off at Aridessa’s Rock.”
He returned to his seat, still smiling, his eyes lingering on Sylvie’s lips. Her face felt warm, and her heart was pounding.
Lance smiled softly, looking at her with genuine affection. “Sylvie, will you be my girlfriend?”
