Chapter 20
“Lily, hold on and let me explain!” Asher called out, but Lily tuned him out, marching straight to the hotel room. A frustrated sigh left Asher’s lips and he hastened his steps in a bid to catch up with her. “For the love of God, let me explain myself?” He reached out and held her hand, stopping her.
Lily immediately snatched her hand out of his, her breathing heavy, and her eyes glossy, but that didn’t stop her from glaring at him. “You can take your explanation and shove it up your ass for all I care, Mr Allard. There’s no explanation for what I saw out there!” She shot him another glare and made to walk away, but she stopped and turned back to look at him. “You know, you are actually an asshole. A big time asshole, a hypocrite and a man that can’t make up his goddamn mind”
“Lily”
“I am not done speaking! When I’m done, I’ll decide if you are worthy of an audience! Asher pinched the spot between his brows and expelled a breath. First, you waltz into the house with my sister in your arms, smiling like you won the biggest freaking lottery, and the next week, you are at my doorstep. You defend me in public and kiss my sister in private? I can’t even call that private! What the hell is wrong with you?”
“She kissed me. Lily.”
“And that makes it okay?”
“I pushed her away.”
That’s definitely what I saw
Lily for God’s sake, just freaking listen!” She shot him a glare that would have had him 6ft under if it was a gun, but she kept quiet anyway. “I was telling her off about what she did at the dinner party when she suddenly kissed me, I hadn’t even registered what was happening when you walked in on it. I pushed her away immediately, you have to believe me.”
Biting her bottom lip, Lily crossed her arms over her chest and nodded. Fine, I believe you.” Asher raised a brow and she nodded. “I do. I really believe you.”
Tha-
But that changes nothing. She cut him off and his brows knitted together.” Charlotte kissed you because she knew she could, because you created an enabling environment. Charlotte embarrassed me today because of you. For the past 5 years, you’ve treated me like shit because of Charlotte. Nothing has changed, Asher. For a brief moment I thought something did, but with you, it’s a step forward and a thousand back, and I’m sick and tired of it.
“What are you trying to say Lily?
Letting out a puff of breath through her mouth, Lily wiped away the tears and stared at him squarely. I’m saying you should let me go. Let’s get a divo-”
“Don’t!” He cut in sharply, “don’t finish that word, Lily.”
He took a step closer to her, and Lily took one back and was immediately trapped between him and the wall. “Maybe I didn’t make myself clear when I tore those divorce papers, so I’m going to repeat myself once more. You are my wife, Lily Allard, and I am not letting you go.
“You won’t have a choice when this year is up.” He let out a laugh, and his thumb swiped softly across her bottom lip.
“You underestimate me, Lily. You shouldn’t do that.”
“But you are in love with another woman, Asher. Just let me go, and you can have her. You can finally be with the woman you love. Her voice cracked and Asher clenched his fists.
Chapter 20
“I am not in love will mother woman, Lily”
Don’t He to my face! For 5 years you punished me because of her. You made me pay for your love, Asher, and now you look me in the face and tell me you don’t love her?”
Silence lingered for a few seconds, before he gently tucked her air behind her ear. “I never meant to punish you, Lily. I believed it best if we both stayed away from each other, I never meant to hurt nor punish you.”
“It’s too late for an apology now.” She whispered and he rubbed her cheek softly.
“I’ll spend forever making it up to you then. I’ll show you how sorry I am even if it takes the rest of my life to get your forgiveness. Lily felt like the breath was knocked out of her lungs at his words, but she knew better.
“Why? Why will you do that Asher? You don’t even love me. His eyes immediately widened, and his hand dropped to his side. A sad smile made its way to Lily’s face.
Releasing a breath, she thinned her lips and nodded. “Goodnight, Asher. She whispered and wiggled her way out of his hold.
Asher stared at her retreating figure till she disappeared into her room, and a door stood between them. He wanted to walk in there and tell her that might not love her but at least he cared, he wanted her around, she was his his wife, his family.. His only family, but he couldn’t.
He palmed his face, and with a resigned sigh, he turned to walk into his room when he heard her door creak open and he immediately stopped, a hopeful warmth in his heart but he couldn’t tell what he was hoping for. He just wanted to see her one last time tonight.
Jily poked her head through the door, and she looked nervous have a deal for you.” She said, her voice barely audible, and Asher raised his brows, urging her to continue and she gulped.
“15 days. For the next 45 days, I’m going to try to make you fall in love with me, and if you do… I’ll stay as your wife
“and if I don’t?”
She took a deep breath. ‘you’ll sign the divorce papers
They both held each other’s gaze for a while, Lily’s heart beating in anticipation, and finally, Asher nodded. “Deal.”
