Chapter 17
Camryn’s straightforward and polite demeanor gradually extinguished the flickering hope burning in Xavion’s heart.
Xavion stared at her intently, searching desperately for traces of the person he once knew. But the more he looked, the more he saw only a mask of icy
indifference.
His clasped hands unconsciously tightened, his voice ringed with a quiet bitterness
“And if it is? Or if it isn’t? Camryn, do we really need to keep such precise accounts between us?”
It was an expected answer.
Camryn took a sip of her coffee before replying to him, her tone as light as ever. “Mr. Jacobson, our relationship is simply that of an investor and an artist. Certain things must be clarified to avoid any misunderstandings.”
“Is that a
Camryn’s tone remained unwavering despite the fleeting disappointment in Xavion’s eyes. “Of course.”
Before coming here, Xavion had imagined countless scenarios–silence, tears, or feigned composure–for their reunion. He never expected this detached, professional distance.
Was he the only one still clinging to the past, unable to move on?
Desperate to disprove this, he brought up their history, hoping for some validation.
“But we were together for so long. Have you forgotten about us?” he pressed on
“Three years… It’s been three years since we broke up. It’s not a long time, but it’s long enough to start a new life. There’s no need to revisit the past, especially since it wasn’t a pleasant memory.”
Each word pierced Xavion like a needle. The sorrow overwhelmed him, and he could no longer conceal the grief on his face.
The room grew heavy with silence, the tension broken only by his slightly repid breaths.
After what felt like an eternity, Camryn heard his low, raspy apology.
“I’m sorry, Camryn. I did you wrong. I let you down. I deeply regret it.”
By now, Camryn had long let go of those old memories,
Everyone had recklessly thrown themselves into love without a second thought when they were young
As for Camryn, she simply had worse luck and fell for the wrong person. She had made peace with her mistakes and found the courage to start over, so her heart remained unshaken when faced with his belated apology.
“It’s all in the past. Let’s not bring it up again.”
With that, Camryn stood up and left the conference room.
The unexpected reunion ended as abruptly as it began.
Outside, Zayne, who had been waiting for a long time, quickly approached her and asked excitedly, “Camryn, do you and Mr. Jacobson know each other? How did the conversation go?”
Having known Zayne for so long, Camryn could instantly guess what he was getting at. She carefully chose her words. “He’s the older brother of a friend. We’ve met a few times before. The conversation went okay, but he and I are not particularly close.”
Zayne, knowing her personality well, chuckled knowingly. “Are you brushing me off again? If you two are just acquaintances, how did such a covered opportunity end up with a newcomer like you? Come on, give me some insider info! I need some leverage if I’m going to fight for better spots for us!” “If I really had connections, would I have suffered in the palm of your hands all these years? Zayne, don’t get any funny ideas. Let’s just focus on singing, training, and waiting for our turn.”
As she spoke, she nudged him into the recording studio to start their work for the day.
By the time the new song was recorded, it was already evening.
Camryn stretched as she left the company after work. Downstairs, she saw Yvette waiting in the distance, waving at her.
Though they reunited on the day Camryn returned, they had been so busy with work cand moving the past
it two weeks that they could only communicate
via text. Since they both had the next day off, they decided to catch up properly.
First, they went to their favorite restaurant for dinner, followed by a movie.
It was already 11:00 pm by the time they left the theater, Camryn brought Yvette to her new home.
As soon as Yvette saw the new slippers, pajamas, and essentials prepared for her, she was delighted beyond measure, Pulling Carryn onto the couch, she nestled in, smacking and chatting about random gossip while a show played in the background.
The scene felt no different from the old days.
It felt as though the two of them had been transported back to their school days, filling their hearts with a deep sense of nostalgia.
