My instructors said my body was a gift, a one
in five hundred or one in a thousand talent.
But after falling from a stage, I never danced
again.
I locked myself up after, it was the most
painful time of my life.
My parents were sad, but then, they sent
Chloe to my former teacher.
“Maybe she’s more talented than you,” they’d
said.
From then on, I couldn’t watch anything that
had to do with dance.
Tonight, like every other night, was just
another ordinary night.

The wind was light, the moon was bright.
I didn’t look back once, from the moment I
decided to leave until I got on the plane.
Once on board, the flight attendant gave me
a small cake.
“Ma’am, thank you for flying with us, happy
birthday!”
I smiled, surprised. Thank you.
My destination was my grandmother’s rural
home.
After I landed, I had to take a train and then a
tour bus.
The village where my grandmother lived had
く
become a tourist site, with daily shuttle
buses.
The bus weaved through the mountain roads.
White clouds floated like cotton plants. I took
some pictures, feeling happy, and posted
them on social media.
My phone rang, interrupting my peace.
It was Ben.
“What’s up?”
“Ryan has a fever, where’s the first aid kit?”
“Second floor closet.”
“Got it, thanks.”
