Amelia boarded the plane to France, traveling under a temporary ID. As the plane took off, the past receded, shrinking into the distance.
She landed in France with a new identity and a new life. She was now the owner of a small guesthouse on the French Riviera.
Meanwhile, back in Boston, Silas was losing his mind.
Hours earlier, after dropping Bethany off, she’d clung to him.“Silas, you’re already here. Won’t you come up for a bit?” She traced circles on his palm.
Silas hesitated, a strange unease settling in his chest.“Not tonight. Go on up. I need to get back to Amy.” He pulled away, remembering his promise. He hadn’t spent quality time with her in a while. She’d be upset if he didn’t come home. The
thought brought a smile to his face.

Bethany wrapped her arms around his waist.“Silas, you you wanted to see me in that new lingerie. You’re here now. If you don’t see it tonight, I’m
never wearing it.” Her hand slipped inside his shirt.
Silas’s face hardened.“No, I promised Amy…” But Bethany’s persistence, as
always, won.
Hours later, he smoothed his clothes, checking for any telltale wrinkles, and
drove home.

“Amy, I’m back. Sorry I was…” He stopped mid–sentence. The house was
empty.
The box of sticky buns sat untouched in the trash.
Panic clenched his chest. He called out her name, his voice rising with each
repetition.“Amy?”
A terrible thought took root. She left. He refused to believe it.
sorry
“Amy, this isn’t funny! Come on out. Let’s open that gift. Remember? I’m
I had to leave this morning. I’ll make it up to you.” He searched the house,
hoping to find her hiding, playing a joke.
Then he noticed. Things were missing. Where were their photos? All of
them. Gone. Even their wedding portrait.
He stumbled into the backyard. The cherry orchard was gone, reduced to
bare earth. The gardeners were busy planting flowers and shrubs.
“Who told you to do this?” he demanded, his voice tight with a fear he
couldn’t name.“Where are the cherry trees?”
The gardeners exchanged confused glances. “Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling told
us to remove them three days ago. She had them taken away and burned. We
assumed…since you always dote on her…”
