(The Unkept Promise Chapter 7
“Nothing,” Amelia replied, her eyes fixed on the cityscape outside.

Suddenly, the sky exploded with fireworks, a dazzling spectacle of light and
color. Amelia remembered Bethany’s words: Silas was putting on a fireworks
display for her.
Seeing her captivated by the show, Silas smiled tenderly.“You like fireworks?
I’ll put on a show for you. Bigger and better than this one. Just for you.” He held
her tighter.
Amelia managed a smile, but it was tinged with bitterness and unshed tears.
“Silas, I don’t like hand–me–downs.” Not fireworks, and certainly
not…him.
Silas’s heart skipped a beat. Though she was referring to the fireworks, he
felt a sudden pang of unease. He held her closer. “Then I’ll get you something else.
Something even more special. I won’t let any other woman outdo me.”
Amelia remained silent, staring into the distance.
For the next few days, Silas was distant, coming and going at odd hours.
Even the house staff noticed.“Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Sterling must be planning a
surprise for you!” one remarked cheerfully.“He’s so devoted. First the custom

jewelry, and now this! He just keeps spoiling you.”
Amelia listened impassively, her face betraying nothing.

Then, one afternoon, Silas took her hand, a mysterious glint in his
eyes.“Amy, I’m taking you somewhere. You’re going to love it.”
As Amelia opened her mouth to decline, her phone buzzed. A text from
Bethany. Amelia, guess who’s more important to him now? You, or me?
A second later, Silas’s phone buzzed. Amelia glanced at the screen. It was a
picture of Bethany’s legs clad in black stockings, followed by a playful message:
Don’t be late…or you’ll miss out!
Silas’s eyes darkened. He swallowed hard, then slipped his phone into his
pocket.“Amy, something came up at work. I have to go. I’ll take you out for your
surprise later, okay?”
She looked at him, a strange smile playing on her lips. The smile unnerved
him. Without a word, she got out of the car.
After a three–second hesitation, Silas sped away, leaving her standing on
the curb.
Hours later, another text from Bethany. A picture of a pile of torn condom wrappers in a trash can. You lose again, Amelia! And I’m pregnant, remember?
He just couldn’t wait. He must really love me, huh?

Amelia didn’t reply. She was leaving. Bethany’s taunts no longer had the
power to wound her.
Silas didn’t come home for several nights. Amelia didn’t ask.
Bethany, however, kept the texts coming. Pictures of peeled fruit,
overflowing shopping bags from luxury stores, home–cooked meals… all
testaments to Silas’s affection.
Amelia didn’t respond. She was busy erasing herself from the house. If she was going to disappear, she would disappear completely.
