Amelia blinked, Liam’s parents had come to visit from overseas, and she
knew he’d planned to spend the evening with them, even if he wasn’t attending
the gala.
Liam seemed to read her mind. He handed her a small gift. My parents were
just passing through on their way to a vacation. They wanted to see me for dinner,
but they’ve already gone back to their villa.”
Amelia nodded, inviting him in.
Liam noticed the half–eaten mooncakes. “Is that all you had for dinner?”
She blushed, nodding, then her stomach rumbled loudly.
Liam sighed. “What if I hadn’t come over? You would have ended up with a
stomach ache.”
Familiar with her kitchen, he opened the fridge.“Fried rice okay?”
She peeked around the door, nodding.
He quickly prepared a plate of fragrant fried rice and several other dishes. As
he turned to clean up, Amelia tugged on his sleeve.“Will you eat with me?”
They ate and talked. Relieved to have company, Amelia finally opened up to

Liam listened patiently, holding her hand. She didn’t pull away.
Later, she fell sleep against his shoulder. He gently carried her to her bed.
Before turning off the light, he wiped away a stray tear. As he turned to leave,
she grabbed his hand.
“Don’t go…” she murmured in her sleep.
Liam’s heart softened. He squeezed her hand. I’m here. I’m not going
anywhere!
Sunlight streamed through the window. Amelia stirred, reaching up to
shield her eyes, realizing she was nestled in Liam’s arms.
She studied his sleeping face, tracing his features with her fingertips. He
opened his eyes, gazing at her silently, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

Morning.”
She smiled back. “Morning.”
After that, their relationship shifted, a subtle but significant change. He
started sharing his plans with her.
“You’re going back home?” Amelia asked, surprised.
Liam’s family business was primarily overseas. Since his parents had settled
in New Zealand, their remaining domestic holdings were managed remotely.
He set a warm glass of milk in front of her. “Ian Carter is taking over the
company and marrying Sarah Hughes. The Hughes family are distant relatives
on my mother’s side. I’m going to the wedding.”
He tapped his fingers on the table, a sly smile playing on his lips. “And to
settle a score, on your behalf.”
Amelia’s grip tightened around her mug. Liam was the first person to offer
to fight for her, to avenge the pain Ethan had caused.
“It’s okay…” she started.
She didn’t care about Ethan anymore. He was already paying the price.
Liam took her hand, his voice firm.“Hope, you’re important to me. I don’t

Especially not like that.
