He smiled at me. My eyes welled up. It was Alex, my friend from the
orphanage. He and Ethan were older than me, and they had always shielded me.
Later, they were adopted, and I was left in the orphanage. He’d missed me. Later,
he found Ethan and learned about my marriage. He’d seen the news about Caleb
and felt sorry for me. Then, he moved to Rome because he heard I was studying
there.
We talked for a long time. I learnedthat he and Ethan were married and had
moved to Rome for me. I cried, releasing years of pent–up emotions.
I saw Ethan at dinner. We cried again. Ethan brought my favorite
dishes.“Sarah, what are your plans?”
I finished my steak and shook
steak and shook my head.“I don’t know. I want to graduate,
have my art show, find a job… As for going home…”
I hesitated. I needed to see Mrs. Davis, who had been supporting me. But
going back meant seeing Caleb again. Thinking about how crazy he was, I
frowned.
Ethan and Alex looked at each other.“Let’s eat. We’ll back you up.”
Autumn arrived. My graduation ceremony finally happened.
“Sarah, congratulations!” my friends said to me. My eyes welled up again. We

had a final dinner. I drank a bit too much wine. Thinking of how hard it would
be to see them again, we laughed and cried until late at night.
A week later, I said goodbye to my friends and Italy and returned home with Alex and Ethan. I came back only to visit Mrs. Davis and help Alex and Ethan
with their art exhibition.
I saw Mrs. Davis and we cried again. She was relieved to hear about my success. She said,“After you left, Caleb came looking for you.”
