Three days later, Caleb returned to get some clothes. He called my name, but
only the maids responded.
“Where is she?” he asked.
The maids looked uneasy.“Mrs. Hayes isn’t home…*
He came in and saw the divorce papers. Usually, he would ignore them. But
this time, he picked them up. His name was on them!
His face turned cold. He touched his signature; it was real. Then, he
remembered the morning I made steak for him. I gave him something to sign,
and he thought it was a contract about helping the orphans. But it was the
divorce papers!
He crushed the papers. I divorced him? He thought I was just being jealous.
After all, we were married for four years. He believed that I’d return eventually.
For the next few days, the maids didn’t mention me. Caleb brought Olivia
home from the hospital.
Chloe threw down her spoon. “Who made this porridge? It’s awful! I want
Sarah’s porridge!”
A maid said nervously, “Mrs. Hayes hasn’t come back yet…”

Chloe’s eyes widened. She didn’t know I was serious about leaving. Then,
she thought of the divorce papers, which Caleb had just torn up and thrown
away. She looked at Olivia, who was quietly eating. Olivia acted as if this had
nothing to do with her.
Caleb frowned at my absence. Chloe said, “It’s okay, Caleb. You can be with
Olivia now. She’s single.”
“How did you know I was divorced?”
“The day you sent me here to give Sarah the medicine, I saw the papers! But I
thought she was joking.”
Caleb’s face darkened. He called me but it was disconnected. I’d canceled my
phone number! Then, he stood up and left, ignoring Chloe.
At a red light, he calmed down. Where should he find me? I used to live in an
orphanage. So, he drove to the orphanage.
The director was cold.“Mr. Hayes, what do you want?”
Caleb said, “I want to know where she is…” He stopped.
The director scoffed. “You’ve been her husband for four years and you don’t
know where she is? How would I know that? Please leave.”
Caleb left empty–handed. He punched the steering wheel. He finally

realized that I truly wanted a divorce. But he was unwilling to accept it. Why
would I leave so decisively? His phone rang. It was his mother. “Caleb, come
home. I need to talk to you.”

Judith showed him the divorce certificate.
“Sarah didn’t tell you about this?”
Menu
Caleb looked confused. He knew he signed the papers, but he didn’t know I
had even gotten the certificates! The divorce had been a month in the making!
He asked why Judith helped me and set him up with Olivia.
“I know that Olivia broke your heart. But now she’s back, and you’re
divorced. I thought…”
Everyone used to say he and Olivia weren’t made for each other. Now,
everyone
said they were perfect together. He felt uneasy.“But I didn’t agree to
divorce Sarah.” As he said that, he felt a pang of panic. He’d gotten used to me
taking care of him, and he couldn’t imagine life without me. I loved him so
deeply that the divorce must be a joke.
Judith showed him the contract. It was a contract about paying a debt of
gratitude and my signature was on it.“Mom, what’s this?”
Judith explained, “When Olivia left you for her ex–husband, you were
heartbroken. I wanted someone to help you move on.” She asked me to fulfill the
contract and I did it well. I had never called her Mom and considered myself as
Mrs. Hayes.

Judith would treat me as her daughter in law forever if Olivia never
returned. But as soon as the contract ended, Olivia came back and Caleb had an
accident on his way to her. Before she could do anything, I’d asked for a divorce.
Caleb was stunned. Everything I did for him was because of the contract? I’d
never loved him? That was why I was so eager to divorce him when Olivia
returned? But my love for him couldn’t have been fake! He clutched the contract,
his face darkening. It turned out that nothing was real.
