I returned home with my painting. The maids were relieved. “Mrs. Hayes,
you’re finally back! The house is in a mess. Mr. Hayes was furious…”
Caleb was just unaccustomed to my absence, but he should get used to it. I
was leaving soon.
I calmed the maids and entered the villa. It was dark. Caleb sat on the sofa,
bathed in moonlight.
He looked up, scrutinizing me.“Where have you been?”
“To the mountains for inspiration,” I replied, taking off my coat.
He frowned. “Why are you suddenly interested in painting?”
It wasn’t sudden. I was an art major. But I didn’t explain. “Just felt like doing
so,” I said casually.
He pressed his temples. “About the hot pot thing, I didn’t mean to leave you
there. Olivia’s spoiled and sensitive to pain. We grew up together, so I’m used to
taking care of her. I thought you would understand. So why did you leave? Olivia‘
s moved out. Stop making a big deal out of this.”
He sounded like I was to blame. I responded vaguely and started to go
upstairs.

“Wait!” He stood up. T’m hungry. Make me some noodles,”
I showed him my bandaged hand.“You forgot this.”
He hesitated. I went upstairs. Later, a set of expensive jewelry appeared.
He coughed. “Well, I’m sorry I for the hot pot thing. This is compensation.”
I looked at the emerald ring. It was the first gift he’d given me in four years,
as his compensation for snubbing me. I thought of the fancy gifts he’d bought
Olivia, Wasn’t it ironic? I didn’t need it anymore.
He thought I didn’t like it.“I’ve been really busy, you know, Olivia is back. I
had my assistant buy it at auction, and it was the most expensive. If you don’t like
it…*
Chloe burst in.“Olivia, listen, Caleb loves you! You shouldn’t have moved
out! Look, he bought you this ring!” She pointed to the ring in Caleb’s hand, and
then Olivia blushed. Caleb was obviously at a loss. I took the box and handed it to
Olivia,
“Since it’s for you, take it.” I made the choice for him. For the first time,
Caleb’s gaze wasn’t on Olivia. He looked at me, feeling unsettled. I seemed so
different.
