(The Unkept Promise) Chapter 22
Silas’s ruthless retaliation against his “friends” for their disrespectful
comments about Amelia had made him powerful enemies. Now, armed with
evidence of his wrongdoing, they were ready for payback. Bethany didn’t care if
she was being used. She wanted revenge. If she was miserable, Silas should be
too.
She didn’t stop at filing the report. She created a new social media account
and started livestreaming, sharing every sordid detail of her affair with Sila,
painting a picture of a manipulative, deceitful man.
Public opinion, which had begun to soften towards Silas, turned against him
once again. His reputation, and that of Diamond Empire, was in tatters.
He was forced to return to Boston to face the investigation, putting his
search for Amelia on hold.
His company was in chaos. Several key employees defected, and existing
partnerships crumbled. Competitors circled, eager to capitalize on his downfall.
Even if Diamond Empire survived this, it would be severely weakened.
Silas, facing pressure from all sides, hadn’t slept properly in months. He’d

His grandfather, who had long since retired to a quiet life in the Berkshires,
was forced to intervene.
He summoned Silas. His cane hit the floor with a resounding thud.
“Kneel!”
Silas, pale and gaunt, obeyed.
“Is this how I raised you? I warned you. Cherish your wife, and you will
prosper. You promised me. And how have you repaid my trust?” His voice
trembled with rage, his cane striking the floor repeatedly.
Silas lowered his head, his voice hoarse.“I’m sorry. I…I failed Amy.”
His grandfather shook his head. “Bring the cane.”
The family cane, a dark, polished wood inlaid with silver, was brought forth.
A single strike was enough to draw blood.
The cane whistled through the air. Silas gasped, his body tensing as the first
blow landed. He gritted his teeth, but his weakened body couldn’t withstand the
punishment. He swayed, then collapsed.
As a teenager, he’d endured a dozen lashes without flinching.

Sedated and bandaged, Silas finally slept. He dreamt of the day Amelia had accepted his proposal. He was dressed in his finest suit, his heart overflowing with love.“Amy, marry me. I’ll cherish you forever. You’re the only woman I’ll
ever love.” His hand, holding the ring, trembled.
He knew she would say yes.
But in his dream, she turned away.
