“Amy,” he stammered, “I messed up. It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have…I
ended things with Bethany. I made her get rid of the baby. Please, just forgive me.
I’ll do anything. Just don’t leave me.”
His voice was thick with desperation, but Amelia remained calm. She gave a
soft, almost gentle laugh.“Okay. I forgive you.”
The unexpected answer stunned him.“Really?” He was too relieved to
question the sincerity in her voice.
“Yes,” she said, a chilling calmness in her voice. “Isn’t that what you wanted to
hear? I forgive you. Let’s forget about it. Are you happy now?” She could offer him forgiveness, empty words that meant nothing. But reconciliation? Never. A
shattered mirror couldn’t be put back together.
She hung up
before he could respond. She’d told him once that if she
stopped loving him, he could kill himself and she wouldn’t care. He’d forgotten.
“Amy, I bought you sticky buns. Please, forgive me,” he texted, clinging to a
sliver of hope.
Her reply was swift and brutal.“I don’t like them anymore.”
His hands trembled. How could she not?

He tried to reply, but she’d blocked him again.

Her verbal forgiveness brought him no comfort. He knew it wasn’t what he
wanted. But she’d given him what he’d asked for. She didn’t love him anymore.
He’d truly broken her heart.
The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. He’d known it
deep down, ever since she left. But he’d been living in denial, clinging to the
fantasy that she still loved him, that she was just waiting for an apology.
His heart ached, a constant, dull throb. How could he win her back? He didn‘
t even know where to start. Seeing her again seemed impossible, let alone earning
her forgiveness.
Exhausted by the constant calls from Silas, Amelia changed her number.
And she moved again, this time to Germany. The world was a big place.
Just as Silas was preparing to follow her, his company was thrown into crisis.
Bethany, after the abortion and the public shaming, was a pariah. She couldn‘
t find work, and Silas had cut her off financially, reclaiming all the gifts he’d
showered her with. The money in her account was dwindling fast. She was
desperate.
She made a bold move. She filed a report against Silas, accusing him of tax evasion and embezzlement. And she contacted several families who had been
wronged by the Sterlings, offering to help them bring him down.
