When Ruby saw the new house shoes that the housekeeper handed her, she instinctively looked down at her white canvas shoes. They were clean, but they shabby
Ruby, who knew luxury goods, noticed that the house shoes at the Paine residence were designer–branded. It was at that moment she truly understood what the wealth gap meant.
She put on the house shoes and followed the housekeeper in. When they arrived in the living room, Ruby saw Lydia sitting on the sofa.
A nail technician was crouched on the floor, carefully applying a pretty pink polish to Lydia’s toenails. On the sofa were several unopened designer bags that were scattered around.
Ruby stood nervously at the entrance of the living room, stealing a timid glance inside. When Lydia noticed her, she stopped admiring her nails and instructed the housekeeper instead.
“Take all my bags upstairs. I need to call my mom later and tell her to stop buying me any more bags when she’s traveling. The house is practically out of space! Ruby watched on as the housekeeper picked up the bags with envy in her eyes. She loved all those bags,
Once there was space on the sofa, Lydia patted the seat next to her and said, “Since you’re here, come and sit,” Huby nodded, “Ms. Paine.”
Once settled, Ruby looked at Lydia and said, “Ms. Paine, I heard that Rebecca argued with Commander Paine?”
Lydia bristled with anger at the mention of Rebecca, and her face darkened with fury. “Don’t mention Rebecca to mel just thinking about her makes me mad. Who does she think she is, to have the guts to argue with my dad? Does she even know that my dad is a commander in the military?
“Even Christopher has to show my dad respect and follow his orders. And yet she–anobody–dates to talk back to him?”
