Chapter 30
Rebecca figured she could catch the last bus back to the city and was unaware that danger was closing in.
In a comfield in the distance, a middle–aged couple fixed their stares on her with malicious intent. From her petite figure and fair skin, she was unmistakably the Lady who had landed them in trouble.
Carla Cruz nudged Chad Glover’s shoulder. “Honey, are you sure it’s her? Is she the one from the night at the guest house?
She caused us so much trouble! We spent three nights in jail and got tined 300 dollars. Do you know how much com we’d have to harvest to earn that back?”
A dangerous glint flashed in Chad’s eyes. “Niko hasn’t gone to the sea, has he? We’ll hand this lady over to him before he leaves. No one will ever find her once she’s with him on the boat. We’ll take the money and quit this life for good.
“The law’s getting stricter these days. We’ll end up in prison again it we keep this up. Perhaps it’s better to return to Glover Fields, use the money to buy a house for our son, and get him married.”
Carla sounded nervous. “Will that work? The men who arrested us were from the military!”
Chad’s expression darkened. “Niko’s been waiting for so long and refuses to leave. If we don’t deliver this lady to him, he’ll come after us instead. We can’t afford to cross him! Once this lady has gone with him, we’ll return to Glover Fields. Nobody will find us there, and there aren’t any cameras around here.”
Swayed by Chad’s reasoning, Carla clenched her teeth as she watched Rebecca walk away. “Karma does come full circle. This is her punishment. Heaven’s helping us by making sure we cross paths again.”
tout of the comfield and gripped sides in their hands. Their tractor was parked nearby. As long as they caught up to Rebecca, she
The couple cautiously stepped o wouldn’t stand a chance.
At Chad’s signal, the two broke into a run and headed straight for Rebecca.
Rebecca was walking toward the bus stop when she sensed footsteps behind her drawing closer. She hadn’t run into a single person during her time at Tinbago Crest. Since it was so close to Orkney, the mountain wasn’t frequented by locals for foraging.
Her heart clenched in alarm, and her expression grew serious. She quickened her pace, but the footsteps behind her sped up. Suddenly, a rough hand grabbed her shoulder.
“Well, well, we finally caught you! Weren’t you smug when you called the police on us? Now, look how the tables have turned!
had’s sinister voice echoed in her ear as pain shot through her shoulder. Rebecca was forced to tum around and found herself face–to–face with the couple who had malice brimming in their eyes.
Their expressions were menacing in the dim light of the setting sun, and their homifying faces sent Rebecca’s heart thumping in fear.
Her heart felt as if it were clenched by an invisible hand. Of all places, why here? How could she be this unlucky?
Out of fear that Rebecca might fight back, Carla swiftly snatched the sack from Rebecca.
Rebecca’s face tumed pale. Her shovel was inside! And now, her only tool for self–defense was gone!
She bit her lip and struggled desperately, but Chad overpowered her and pinned her down. Her knees slammed against the rocky mountain path, and small stones pierced through her pants, drawing blood,
Carla curiously opened the sack to take a look. She hadn’t received much education and had never seen anything like the ganodermata Rebecca had collected.
“What are these ugly things? They don’t even look edible!”
With that, she snapped the ganodermata right in front of Rebecca.
