During
journey to Orkney, Rebecca could not help but notice how fashionable the local women were. Their outfits were far more polished than anything she owned. Life here seemed much more expensive, and Rebecca was down to her last noo dollars.
I she wanted to visit Christopher’s unit, she’d need at least one decent outfit to make an impression. But for now, she had a bigger dilemma–how could she even ask for a chance to visit Christopher’s unit?
Rebecca per a long time considering her options. Unless she had some unique skill or talent, she seemed unlikely to gain entry
Back in the countryside, Rebecca spent countless hours at the clinic with her uncle, leaming basic medical care, such as administering shots and treating minor Inputtes. As a result, she had always been fascinated by the idea of becoming a doctor.
Sometimes, she would sneak into the mountains to gather medicinal herbs, occasionally getting lucky enough to find Gin roor. If she could join the unit as a medic, she might feel like she was helping fulfill Vaughn’s mission
Reberca’s thoughts were interrupted when a housekeeper knocked on her door to tell her dinner was ready. She answered politely and headed downstalis.
The living room buzzed with activity when Rebecca entered. Ruby was already in the kitchen, helping one of the cooks prepare soup, Ducan sat nearby, watching Ruby with approval as she worked.
Ruby’s sweet voice floated from the kitchen. “Chris, is there a particular soup you like? If you’d like, can make another batch for you to take to the unit in a thermos”
Duncan chudded, “Ruby, you’re so thoughtful–st like your father. He always paid attention to the little things, too.”
Reberra descended the stains, feeling slightly out of place amidst the cozy scene.
Christopher lounged on the couch, his gaze flickering to her for a brief moment before he looked away. His indifference made it seem as though they were complete strangers.
Duncan noticed Rebecca and motioned for her to join them. “Rebecca, come sit She nodded and walked over, sitting down as instructed.
it down
Dinner will be ready soon.”
Duncan, ever curious, started asking questions. “Rebecca, Theard from Vaughn that you grew up in the countryside. The conditions must have been tough. Are you still in school?”
Reberca’s jaw lightened. Her aunt had never spared a penny to send her to college. While Layla had dreams of higher education, she did not make the cut despite the family’s “dedicated efforts to support her
“Mr. Duncan, I didn’t attend college,” Reberra said plainly.
“Was it because of financial difficulties, or was it a matter of grades? Duncan pressed further.
Rebecca’s expression remained calm but firm. “In the countryside, most kids don’t go to college. It was never something my family considered for me.”
Duncan sighed, sympathy etched on his face. “Rural kids really do have it tough. Now that you’re in Orkney, I’ll make sure you and Ruby have the chance to go back to school Education is the key to improving your future, Tell me, Rebecca, what major Interests you? I’ll have someone help you plan your studies.” However, before Duncan could continue, Rebecca straightened and spoke up, “Mr. Duncan, I have a favor to asi Would that be okay?
Her words caught Ruby’s attention. She stepped out of the kitchen while holding a bowl of chicken noodle soup, clearly curious.
Ruby smarked inwardly, wondering what nonsense Rebecca was about to come up with She thought Rebecca was already so clueless when it came to making an Impression, and it was pathete that she was even trying to make demands now.
