Chapter 15
“It’s alright. I can just head back down the mountain now.” Evelyn had no interest in staying there and being an eyesore.
She had just taken a step when a warm hand caught her wrist. Meeting Lucas‘ nonchalant gaze, she heard him say, “You can stay. I’ll switch rooms.”
Evelyn frowned. She was about to shake his hand off when he released his grip and deliberately created some distance between them. “It’ll be hard for me to explain things to Grandma if you
leave now.”
She immediately understood what he meant. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she clarified, “Are you saying that you want me to cover for you and Tiffany?”
What did he mean by it would be hard for him to explain things to Maria? What on earth did he take her for?
Lucas looked at her and adjusted his cufflinks. “We wouldn’t be having such problems if you had not come up here.”
A wave of frustration filled up from within her. Was he trying to say that the whole situation was her fault?
She pursed her lips and stated her condition. “Fine, but you have to approve my resignation immediately.”
He narrowed his eyes as he smirked in amusement. “Alright.”
Evelyn did not know why he was smiling, but she turned and returned to her room.
After running into Lucas and Tiffany, she finally understood why he had never mentioned the trip to her. It turned out he had planned to bring Tiffany instead.
If she knew that would be the case, she would never have come willingly.
Evelyn rubbed her temples. Although she no longer cared about such things, she still felt hurt.
After unpacking some of her clothes, she looked up some activities that she could do up in the mountains.
As it turned out, there was a horse stable where the employees would guide the horse around to allow their guests to experience horseback riding. It seemed like an interesting activity to her.
So, Evelyn went straight to the stables.
She had just arrived when she heard a shy voice exclaimed, “Blake! You’re being naughty again!”
“How is this my fault?” Blake replied in a mischievous tone.
Evelyn paused, only to find two sets of eyes turning toward her. Blake and Jessica were riding a horse together. Holding the reins, he had one arm around her. He used his other hand to tilt her chin upward to kiss her.
Perhaps she had been staring for too long because Blake suddenly turned and looked over. His eyes were dark, and he frowned instinctively.
It was as if he was displeased at being interrupted while he was flirting.
Evelyn immediately felt a stab at her pride. She had grown accustomed to being protected by Blake. He would always treat her as if she was special, never once saying anything harsh to her. On top of giving her his love for many years, he was also her first love.
Hence, when something happened to Blake three years ago, she agreed to Derek’s request to marry Lucas in exchange for a reduction in Blake’s sentence,
Even if she had already let go of her feelings toward him, he was still the most important person in her life. However, he had changed, becoming cold and distant.
Was anything ever real?
She had been married to Lucas for three years but couldn’t win his heart. How about Blake, though?
Blake had once loved her deeply. Even if his love for her was gone, did their familial bond disappear as well?
Evelyn did not greet them and planned to leave when Jessica saw her. “Evelyn? I didn’t know you came too. Do you want to have a meal with us? My friend, Tiffany, is here with her boyfriend
150.”
Confusion flickered across Evelyn’s eyes. It turned out that Jessica and Tiffany were friends, which meant Blake was aware of how disastrous her marriage with Lucas was. However, he did not care about her.
“It’s alright. I’ve already eaten,” Evelyn answered. Her mood had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Then, she turned to leave.
Jessica looked at Evelyn before shoving Blake lightly. “She doesn’t look very well. Is she sick? Do you want to go and check up on her?”
Not giving much of a reaction, Blake replied, “She’s a grown adult. It’s not like she’s going to die or anything. Why are you being so dramatic?”
“How can you be so unconcerned about her well–being?” Jessica asked in confusion.
Blake raised his eyebrow, chuckling. “She’s just my sister. You and Selina were the only ones who had visited me throughout the three years when I was in prison. I know exactly who ! should treat well.”
Jessica blushed. “At least you still have a conscience…”
Evelyn did not leave her room again. She felt awkward no matter which couple she ran into.
One of them was her husband, while the other man was her brother. She used to be close to them both, yet they both hated her now.
Why should she have to put herself through such humiliation?
She did not want to overthink things, so she decided to read through different forums from abroad about drones before she took her medication and fell asleep.
She had planned to bead down the mountain the next day. So, she woke up at 8:00 am and went out. Then, she immediately saw the room opposite hers open, revealing Lucas and Tiffany stepping out
