Chapter 6
Joselyn didn’t answer directly. She just brushed it off, saying, “I was just saying. Don’t overthink it. I mean, who really knows what the future holds?”
“What’s so uncertain about it? As long as I’m here, there’s nothing to question.”
Evan clearly wasn’t buying it. But before he could press further, Megan cut in, “Ms. Wright, I heard you studied dance, Why don’t you loosen up a little and go have some fun on the dance floor?”
Joselyn shook her head. “No, thanks. I’m not in the mood.”
But Megan refused to give up. “Oh, don’t worry, Ms. Wright. I’ve reserved the whole place. The dance floor is empty now. We’ll dance with you.”
Evan’s expression darkened. He didn’t want Joselyn to go, and he was determined to get a clear answer about what she meant earlier.
But then, his friends started chiming in. “Come on, Evan. Let Joselyn dance a little. We’d love to see her in action.”
One of them leaned over and whispered something in Evan’s ear. His face instantly fell. He hesitated for a few seconds, then finally gave a slight nod.
Joselyn had a bad feeling as Megan pulled her toward the dance floor.
She had a nagging feeling they were plotting something. She just wanted to finish the dance and leave as soon as possible.
But as soon as they reached the floor, Megan suddenly twisted her ankle and collapsed.
She clutched her foot, tears welling in her eyes. “Evan, my ankle hurts so bad. Can you take me to the hospital?”
Evan frowned, clearly irritated, but Megan grabbed his sleeve. Her voice trembled as if she were on the verge of tears. “Our families go way back. You can’t just leave me like this.”
In the end, Evan gave in. He turned to Joselyn and said, “Josie, I’ll drop her off at the hospital. Stay and have fun for a bit. If you want to go home, the driver’s outside.” Joselyn nodded, but the unease in her chest only grew stronger.
After Evan left, she was about to leave as well. However, his friends blocked her way, insisting that she shouldn’t ruin the fun since it was rare for her to come out.
She was completely surrounded. There was no way out. With no other choice, she sat there, listening to the thumping music.
After sitting with her for a while, his friends suddenly said, “Joselyn, we’re stepping out to make a call. We’ll be back in a bit.”
Joselyn’s chest tightened. Something felt off.
As soon as Evan’s friends left and the dance floor emptied out, she grabbed her bag from the private room and was about to leave.
Just then, the door swung open.
But instead of Evan’s friends, a group of ragged vagrants shuffled in. The moment they stepped inside, their eyes locked onto Joselyn, and crude laughter spilled from their lips. “Damn, look at this one. We hit the jackpot tonight!”
Joselyn’s face paled with fear. She stumbled back a few steps, but the group lunged at her like a pack of starving wolves.
She struggled desperately, but there was no way she could overpower several men. Her clothes were torn, and her screams were swallowed by the blaring music.
“Get away from me! Don’t touch me!” Her voice shook as tears blurred her vision.
She kicked and fought with all her strength, but they were relentless. They gripped her wrists and pinned her to the ground.
Her dress was torn apart, exposing her skin to the cold air. Her stomach twisted with nausea. She thought she was going to throw up.
“Help! Someone! Please! Help me!” she screamed in desperation, but no one answered. Her vision swam, and all she could hear was their leering laughter and heavy breathing.
Just as she was about to lose all hope, the door burst open with a deafening kick.
Evan stormed in like a demon from hell, his eyes blazing with unrestrained fury.
Without a word, he grabbed one of the vagrants by the collar and drove his fist into his face. The guy let out a strangled scream as he crumpled to the floor.
But Evan wasn’t done. His fists rained down, brutal and unrelenting, until every last one of them was left groaning on the ground.
Joselyn trembled uncontrollably. Darkness swallowed her whole as she collapsed.
