Chapter 21
“Josie! Josie!” Evan’s voice echoed through the street, raw with anguish and regret.
In the car, Jarrett glanced at the rearview mirror, watching Evan’s frantic figure shrinking in the distance. Then, he turned to Joselyn.
After a deep breath, he asked, “Josie, can you tell me everything about you two?”
Joselyn lifted her head, her lips trembling.
She told Jarrett everything–from the way she and Evan had first met to how they’d grown close, how he’d used her, and how it had all fallen apart. She left nothing out. When she finished, she lowered her head. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “Jarrett, do you think I’m dirty? If you do, I –”
Before she could finish, Jarrett pulled her into his arms and held her tight. “You’re the purest woman I’ve ever met. And I’ll always love you.”
Joselyn buried her face in his chest, tears slipping down her cheeks.
Jarrett held her close. His expression darkened as he thought about what Evan had done to Joselyn.
He glanced at the mirror again, watching Evan still chasing after them like a madman. He ordered the driver, “Turn the car around. Run him down.”
The driver hesitated for a split second but, seeing the ruthless glint in Jarrett’s eyes, he obeyed.
Evan’s heart leaped when he saw the car make a U–turn. He thought that Joselyn had changed her mind. But in the next second, the car suddenly sped up, racing straight toward him.
With a deafening crash, his body arced through the air before slamming hard onto the ground. Pain exploded through his body, and blood gushed from his mouth. Then, everything went black
In the haze of unconsciousness, Evan felt himself slipping back to the moment he’d first met Joselyn.
That day, his friends had pointed at Joselyn in the distance and said, “Evan, that’s Jarrett’s sister, Joselyn. I’ve already arranged for a car to hit her. Then, you can swoop in and play the hero. She’ll definitely fall for you, and that way, you can finally get your revenge on Jarrett.”
A deafening buzz filled Evan’s mind, as if he’d been struck by lightning.
He shoved his friends away, panic creeping into his voice. “No! I don’t want revenge anymore! Jarrett can have whatever he wants. I just want his sister! I just want Joselyn!”
But it was too late. The car had already sped toward Joselyn.
Evan dashed forward like a madman and shoved her out of the way.
Joselyn stared at him in shock. As she ran toward him, he suddenly smiled and said gently, “Hey, lady. My name’s Evan Lloyd. Nice to meet you.”
The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the ward Evan jolted upright in bed, his face as pale as a sheet.
The guys standing around his bedside erupted in excitement when they saw him awake.
“Evan! Holy shit, you’re awake!”
Evan’s mind was a mess. His voice came out rough. “How long was I out? Where’s Josie? Where is she?”
His friends exchanged uneasy glances before one of them hesitantly said, “Two weeks, man. The doctor said you almost ended up in a coma.”
Evan’s face turned ghostly pale. His voice carried a hint of urgency as he repeated, “Where’s Josie?”
A heavy silence settled over the room. Then, after what felt like an eternity, someone finally said, “Joselyn and Jarrett… are having their wedding today.”
A deafening ringing filled Evan’s ears. His voice trembled “Wedding? They’re… getting married?”
