Chapter 11
Megan’s voice grew louder, her emotions spiraling further out of control.
The guests around them began to whisper. The tension in the air thickened as things quickly got out of hand.
Evan’s expression was icy, though a flicker of something more complicated flashed in his eyes.
His friends, growing desperate, leaned in and whispered to him, “You’ve gotta say something, Evan. If you don’t, this is going to get way worse.”
But Evan remained silent.
Megan’s tears finally fell. Her voice was laced with despair. “Do you like her or not, Evan? Tell me! They all say it’s just one sentence, but you won’t say it. Do you know why?”
Evan’s eyes flickered. When he finally spoke, his voice was utterly cold. “Are you done yet, Megan?”
But Megan didn’t seem to hear him. She pressed on. “No! Not even close! I’m not leaving until you answer me. Do you like her or not?
“If you don’t, then why did you spend so much money on her? Why are you throwing her such an extravagant birthday party? Why are you protecting her, even at your own expense?” Evan’s face darkened further, his anger starting to show. He grabbed Megan’s wrist tightly and warned, “Don’t push me, Megan.”
Megan, however, seemed to have reached her breaking point. Her voice cut through the room. “I’m pushing you? You’re the one pushing me, Evan! I’ve loved you for years, and you keep hurting me for a woman who’s just being used! Do you even have a heart?”
Her questions and accusations seemed to tear his heart into pieces.
Evan’s face remained frozen in iciness, but a subtle panic flickered in his eyes. He gestured sharply for the bodyguards to take Megan away.
“You didn’t answer my question, but your actions revealed everything! You’re pathetic! You’re trying to use her for revenge while you’re in love with her!”
Megan was being dragged out by the bodyguards, but her voice remained sharp, as if she wanted to vent all her grievances and frustration.
Evan’s face turned ashen. He clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
He scanned the room, his gaze chilling and unwavering as it swept over everyone. “Enough.”
After Megan was hauled out, the banquet hall turned eerily quiet. Evan’s friends exchanged uneasy glances. Their faces were etched with concern and confusion.
Finally, one couldn’t hold back. “Evan, why didn’t you just say something? It could’ve all been settled with one sentence. Why let it get this out of hand?”
“Yeah, Evan. You-”
Evan’s eyes narrowed, and his voice was tight with suppressed fury. “She comes in here questioning me, and now you’re questioning me too? You want Joselyn to see you all pushing me for answers when she comes in? Really?”
His tone silenced the group. None of them dared to speak up.
One of them mumbled, “It’s been so long. Where’s Joselyn?”
Evan frowned. A sense of unease rose within him amidst the murmurs of the crowd. He checked the time. She was definitely running late. Had something happened to her?
He pulled out his phone to dial Joselyn’s number.
But as the screen lit up, a single unread message popped up. He hesitated for a moment before tapping on the message. His gaze was fixed on the screen. “Let’s end this, Evan. I don’t love you anymore.”
Evan froze in place, as if someone had cast a spell to keep him still. His fingers trembled as he stared at the screen. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His hand shook as he quickly typed a reply, but the message wouldn’t go through. He’d been blocked.
Frantically, he dialed her number again, but all he heard was the cold, mechanical voice. “The number you’ve dialed is currently on flight mode.”
He tried again, but the same message repeated. “The number you’ve dialed is currently on flight mode.”
Undeterred, he dialed again, but the message repeated once more,
She was on a plane?
Evan’s face drained of color as a panic–stricken look crossed his face.
Seeing him like this, his friends rushed over. “What happened, Evan?”
“Yeah, what’s the deal? Why are you just standing there? The party’s already a disaster. Who knows what other drama will unfold if we delay any longer?”
They crowded around, peering at his phone, and all saw the message.
Instantly, the crowd erupted, talking over each other in a flurry of voices.
“Let’s end this? What? I don’t love you anymore? But she was so in love with you! Why the sudden breakup? This came out of nowhere!” someone exclaimed in disbelief. “Evan, what was she like when she left? Did anything seem off?” another asked urgently.
Evan’s mind was spinning. He thought back to when she’d left earlier.
She’d seemed calm, and she’d even smiled a little. She’d said she was going to pick up Jarrett and had taken a suitcase with some old dance costumes she wanted to get rid of. “Holy crap!” One of his friends finally realized what was going on. His voice was etched with shock as he said, “Evan, check your video folder!”
