Chapter 10
The moment the doors to the banquet hall swung open, a flicker of excitement flashed in Evan’s eyes. However, it was quickly replaced by a cold, biting chill.
Because it wasn’t Joselyn walking in. It was Megan.
She wore a luxurious dress, and her makeup was flawless, yet her face betrayed the anger and hurt she felt. Her eyes locked on Evan as she walked straight toward him.
Evan’s expression darkened instantly. His voice was frosty as he asked, “What are you doing here? Who let you in? I didn’t send you an invitation.”
Megan bit her lip. Trembling, she replied, “I’m your fiancée. You’re throwing a birthday party for another woman, and I’m not allowed to come?”
Evan’s eyes turned sharp, his tone laced with warning. “Don’t make a scene here, Megan.”
But Megan seemed not to hear him. She scanned the banquet hall, her voice growing louder as she spoke.
“Look at this place. These flowers are Juliet roses, the most expensive variety in the world. You must have spent at least 20 million dollars on them.
“The carpet beneath our feet is handwoven, worth ten million dollars a piece. And these chandeliers and oil paintings. Just this party alone must have cost you hundreds of millions! Not to mention the priceless gifts you’ve stacked up!”
Her voice was filled with resentment and anger, as if she were trying to vent every ounce of frustration.
Evan’s expression grew darker, and the guests around them began to whisper. The situation grew increasingly awkward.
Sensing the tension, Evan’s friends quickly stepped in to try and smooth things over.
One of them grabbed Megan’s arm and whispered, “My God, haven’t we already explained this? Evan’s only with Joselyn because she’s Jarrett’s sister. You know Jarrett, right? Evan’s biggest rival.
“They’ve been at it for years. Evan’s just using Joselyn to get back at him. Once that’s done, he’s going to dump her. Don’t make a scene. What if Joselyn notices something’s wrong? She’ll come soon. You should leave now.”
Another one leaned in. His tone was laced with flattery as he said, “Yeah, Ms. Barr. Why don’t you head back for now? Let Evan finish up here, and then he’ll explain everything to you.” But Megan shook them off. With a shrill voice, she demanded, “Why should I? I’m his fiancée, and I have to hide in the shadows while she, a mere pawn, gets all the attention? I won’t stand for it! Evan, I want you to tell me right now–are you really just using Joselyn?”
Her gaze was intense, as though she wanted to see straight through Evan and into his very soul.
Evan remained silent. His eyes were as cold as ever, as if her questions had nothing to do with him.
Meanwhile, his friends were getting desperate. One of them nudged Evan. “Say something, Evan! Don’t let this blow up!”
“Just tell her you’re not into Joselyn, and she’ll leave. Come on. Say it.”
“Evan, you’ve said it before. Just say it again.”
But Evan still didn’t speak. He just stared at Megan coldly.
Megan’s eyes welled up with tears, and her voice trembled with desperation. “Fine. I don’t care about any of that revenge stuff. I just want you to break up with her, right here, right now. And then marry me!”
Her voice cracked as she started to tell the story of how she’d fallen for him. “Do you know how long I’ve loved you? The first time I saw you, it was in a banquet hall just like this one. “I was only 16 then, and it was your birthday. You stood in the center of the crowd, dressed in a black suit. You were the center of everyone’s attention, and you were so dazzling. “From that day on, I couldn’t look at anyone else. All these years, i’ve been following you. Even though you’ve never looked at me, I was more than willing. Do you know how happy I was when I found out our families were going to form an alliance?
“I even wanted to hand over the entire Barr family to you! I can give you anything, but I need you to break up with her right now! No matter what, you have to break up with her today!”
