Chapter 72
I had underestimated Abigail’s sheer persistence She just sat outside to wait after seeing that I didn’t respond. She kept calling, trying to get me to answer, and when I didn’t, she switched to sending texts.
“Samuel, I know you’re home. If you don’t open the door, I’ll sit here until you do.”
Reading her messages, I felt a wave of irritation. We’d already had a bitter argument–why come looking for me again? She was like a fly that wouldn’t leave, buzzing around and getting under my skin,
Wasn’t she supposed to be with Joshua; comforting her little lover? Why on earth was she at my doorstep? Maybe she got into a fight with him and decided to come here to vent her frustrations,
After thinking about it for a while, I finally gave in and opened the door. Leaning against the frame, Abigail nearly fell inside as the door opened. She looked at me, startled, then suddenly wrapped herself around my legs, relief and excitement flashing in her eyes. “Samuel, you finally opened the door.”
She was flushed, her eyes fixed on me, and I could smell the alcohol on her breath. My brows furrowed as I asked sternly, “Have you been drinking?”
She didn’t answer. Instead, she clung tightly to my waist, refusing to let go, slurring in a daze, “Samuel, I miss you.”
“Miss me?”
Her words stunned me. Ever since she’d started seeing someone else, I hadn’t heard anything like that from her. Was she confusing me with someone else?
I lifted her and placed her on the couch, preparing to walk away. But she reached out, pulled me down, and I stumbled, falling onto her.
Her warmth, so close, stirred something in me. She held onto me, whispering tearfully,‘ Samuel, I really do miss you. Why are you so cruel to me?”
Her voice was soft, clinging, wrapping itself around me like ivy reaching for sunlight. She held on tightly, her words melting into pleas. “I can’t be without you. I’ll never divorce you. I wouldn’t know how to live if you left.”
Her words, which were so tender and vulnerable, weakened a part of me I thought had long hardened. Memories surged, surrounding me. In the past, she’d been like this clinging to me, asking for forgiveness with that soft voice, looking up at me like a kitten seeking affection.
People said alcohol brought out the truth, and her words seemed genuine and raw. Despite everything, we loved each other deeply for many years. Could she truly feel nothing for me

I looked at her, trying to stay composed, though inside, I was anything but calm. We both bore responsibility for how things had unraveled between us.
