Chapter 39
“Your artist is badly hurt, yet you’re standing there and just watching? Why didn’t you help bandage his wound?”
Abigail’s voice was sharp with fury as she pointed an accusing finger at Cecilia.
Cecilia was speechless. She was unsure of how to even defend herself.
Joshua had ripped off the bandages himself. Yet, somehow, Cecilia was now cast as the villain with zero awareness.
Meanwhile, Joshua was still putting on his pitiful act on the couch. With an aggrieved look on his face, he held Abigail’s hand and sniffed. “Don’t blame her, Abigail. I told her it was just a minor injury. Actors have to accept risks like this, after all.”
Abigail patted Joshua’s shoulder gently and said softly, “Joshua, you need to stop being so kind. Standing up for others is all well and good, but only if they care about you in return.”
She shot another sharp look at Cecilia. “It’s clear she doesn’t care. Why don’t I find you a new assistant?”
Joshua froze at Abigail’s suggestion, and he quickly waved his hand as he laughed nervously. No need for that. Cecilia has been with me for a long time. Replacing her would mean starting all over, and that’s just not necessary.”
Abigail nodded at his words, and she agreed to drop the matter. Meanwhile, Cecilia stood there, clearly fuming.
Seriously? It was all Joshua’s fault. Yet, here she was, being blamed and nearly getting fired on top of it.
How was that fair?
Then again, maybe getting fired would have been a blessing. Cecilia was tired of working for these hypocrites and constantly walking on eggsbells every day.
Unfortunately, Cecilia knew that Joshua was too selfish to let her go that easily.
“Come on, let’s get you to the hospital,” Abigail sald gently as she helped Joshua up. “You’re hurt pretty badly. You should get proper treatment so it doesn’t scar. If that happens, how will you keep acting?”
Joshua nodded obediently, then slipped on his coat and followed Abigail into the car.
While waiting outside the emergency room for Joshua’s wound to be bandaged, Abigail caught sight of me.
Chapter 39

I just had surgery, and the incision hadn’t fully healed yet. I leaned heavily on the crutches as I limped and moved slowly toward the restroom.
I looked frail and gaunt. My skin was pale, and I looked utterly worn out.
Every few steps, I had to pause to catch my breath and rest against the wall before I could go
- on.
Abigail watched me intently until I disappeared into the restroom before snapping back to reality.
Compared to me, Joshua’s injury was nothing but a scratch. I looked like someone on the
た
brink, fighting desperately against death itself just for a chance to survive.
Yet, through all the pain and exhaustion, I never complained.
However, Abigail never believed a word I had said. She thought I had lied to her before and tried to manipulate her into sympathizing with me.
Abigail’s eyes redeemed, and a pang of guilt stabbed through her.
But it was quickly replaced by a surge
of
anger.
Why should she feel sorry for me?
I was the one who abandoned her. I left her alone during her hardest, darkest times. Why should my illness evoke her pity now? If I had ever loved her, why did I treat her that way?
Until now, she could still recall how her family and friends mocked her after I left. She remembered how desperate and miserable she had felt then.
If it weren’t for Joshua’s warmth, Abigail might not have made it through.
Yes,
it was Joshua who she truly loved. He had always been there for her, encouraging her, standing up to the trolls, and defending her against

What about Samuel Gebb, her husband?
I was nothing but the heartless jerk who had thrown her
