Chapter 5
Megan froze where she stood. Her expression was one of shock. It was as if she simply couldn’t believe what she had just heard.
Well, who could blame her? Harley had always spoken to her gently, never raised his voice, and never said anything harsh. He was always afraid she might feel hurt.
Even I was taken aback by how sharp his tone had just been.
Perhaps realizing he had gone too far, Harley softened slightly and said to Megan in a calm voice, “This is between me and her. It’s not your place to interfere. “You should go back for now.”
But Megan refused. “Harley, did you forget? I can’t stay at my rental for now…”
“If your place is unlivable, go to a hotel. You’re an adult. Don’t tell me you can’t even solve your own problems.
“What do you expect me to do–magically conjure up a new apartment for you?”
His tone was cold, and it showed no sympathy. But I noticed the subtle glance he shot Megan.
He thought he was being discreet, but he didn’t know I’d already found out that he had secretly bought a small house in the suburbs. Megan clearly understood the signal.
She pouted, pretending to be wronged, and quietly slipped the keys from the pocket of Harley’s coat hanging on the rack into her bag before walking out the door. Even then, I didn’t expose their little scheme.
After all, I no longer cared about either of them. And even if I did, calling it out wouldn’t change anything.
That house, on paper, still belonged to Harley. What he did with it-
and who he gave it to -was entirely his business. After Megan left, Harley let out a sigh. When he looked at me again, his tone had grown much softer. “Are you satisfied now? I know you don’t really want a divorce. You’r
Just angry because I’ve been too close to Megan.
“But there’s nothing between her and me. I only felt sorry for her since she’s all alone in this city. As her boss, I thought I should help her out.
“I admit that being close to her might have provoked you, but still, we’re the ones who are married. Everything I’ve done… it was to push you to become better.”
As he spoke, Harley walked toward me with a smile. He opened his arms, intending to hug me. I pushed him away without hesitation.
“The handover for the house is in a month. I need this time to clean up the apartment properly. Since you’re back, figure out how to move your things out on your
Own.”
His arms froze in midair. The smile on his face stiffened.
“Tiana, what are you saying? I already made Megan leave. I’ve said everything I could, and you still want to sell
“You still want a divorce?”
the ment?
He looked as if I’d just deeply hurt him. But during his last round of silent treatment, I was the one who had knelt before him in public just to get him to stay.
I didn’t say a word. But Harley thought my silence meant hesitation.
ite exhaled and added, “Even if you divorce me now, have you thought about what comes next?
“I admit I’m not perfect. But haven’t you considered the possibility that your next partner might not be as good as me? What will you do then?”
I found it laughable. In his eyes, were people supposed to weigh the pros and cons of love and marriage?
I could understand that it was probably his instinct as a businessman. But if that were the case, then there was something I couldn’t understand. When weighing me against Megan, in what way was I lacking?
Still, I didn’t ask. There was no point in talking about it anymore.
Just as I was about to speak, his phone rang. It was a call from the company,
“Mr. Sinclair, we just got a call from our partner. They said there’s a serious problem with the project Ms. Cavanaugh handled.
“They’re furious and demanding we fix it immediately–or they’ll take us to court.”
