Chapter 91
Eloise almost laughed. Despite Lily’s efforts to get the finest seafood, Mavis simply asked if it was
“It’s alright,” Eloise replied.
edible
“So, it’s not that great,” Mavis said with a slight pout. “Who eats sashimi at this time of year? It could easily make your stomach feel uneasy. I made bet pie. We’re having beet pie tonight.”
Eloise nodded. “I love beet pie.”
“Let me tell you, I learned how to season the beef filling from William. It’s really delicious,” Mavis said.
“I’ve had his beet pie before,” Eloise said.
“You have?” Mavis asked, surprised.
Eloise explained that when she was in med school at Aldi University, Willam had been working at Ben’s Ples, and she’d ordered a best pie he made.
Maris’s eyes lit up. “This is destiny! You two are a match made in heaven.”
They chatted excitedly, leaving Lily out of the conversation. After a moment, Mavis noticed the time and said, “Oh, it’s getting lare, Mrs. Kilbourne. 1 can’t keep you for dinner.”
Lily knew Maris was protecting Eloise, and her visit had only brought humiliation. But she had no chalce–she had to be there.
Forcing a smile, Lily changed the subject. “By the way, Mrs. Robinson, are you attending the birthday party for the CEO’s wife of Veridian Dynamics? It’s in a few days,” she asked.
Mavis leaned back into the sofa, “I know Mrs. Atkinson quite well, so of course I’ll be going,” she replied casually.
“Did they send you an invitation? Lily pressed.
“They sent it a while ago. Didn’t you get yours?” Maxis replied.
Lily forced a dry laugh “Mrs. Atidnson must’ve forgotten”
“In that case, I’ll remind her,” Mavis offered.
“That’s great! Perhaps I could go with you, Mrs. Robinson?” Lily suggested
“Sure,” Mavis agreed
Lily had gotten what she came for and left with a sigh of relief.
These wealthy women always stick together and play their power games, Mavis said with a shrug. “When Kilbourne Group was thriving a few years ago, Lily was at the top, looking down her nose at everyone,
“Now that Kilbourne Group is struggling, being subbed is one thing, but Mrs. Arkinson simply excluded her–it’s like she was kicked out of the circle, and that’s why Lily’s so desperate.”
She paused, then took Eloise’s hand. “How you have no interest in these games. Don’t worry, Robinson Group is solid. You can do whatever you want, Your happiness is what matters.”
“Thank you,” Eloise said, giving Mavis a hug. Mavis had really thought things through for her. Just then, a loud argument came from upstairs. Mavis put a hand to her forehead. “These two never stop fighting when they’re together!”
Eloise followed Maris upstairs, and they stopped in front of the study on the second floor.
They arrived just in time to hear Charles yelling, “Don’t worry, I won’t trouble you. I’d rather die than need your help!”
“Fine. Dag your own grave, then!” William shot back.
“Get out, you brat!” Charles shouted.
“I’m leaving I don’t have time for this,” William retorted.
Mavis blocked the doorway, yelling at the two inside. “You two can both get out! I don’t want you running my dinner with Ellie!”
Her outburst silenced both Charles and William. About to walk out, William hesitated and rubbed his nose, not daring to leave.
“It’s las Cauli,” William said, motioning toward Charles “He said he felt dizzy, so I suggested checking his blood p he needed to go to the hospital. He gelused, claiming he’d already taken his meds. I insisted, but he just told me to get lost.”
Throwing up his hands, he added, “So, whose fault is it?” |
“You’re both incredibly stubborn,” Mavis grumbled.
“Let me check him out,” Eloise offered from behind them.
As soon as she spoke, all three of them turned to look at lur.
Mavis slapped her forehead “Oh my gosh, how could I forget? Eloise is a doctor!”
