Chapter 78
Eloise changed into her clothes and walked out to the neighborhood gate, where she saw William leaning against a windowsill. He was chatting with the security guard. She couldn’t tell what they were discussing, but William looked energetic.
“If your steak is tough and dry, you must have made a mistake during the first step when slicing the meat. You shouldn’t slice it along the grain, you need to cut across it. Also, when marinating, you can try adding some buttermilk. It’ll tenderize the meat.”
As Eloise approached, she overheard William telling the security guard how to make a juicy and tender steak. The guard listened intently and even pulled out a notebook to jot it down
“My wife passed away, so I cook for myself now. Every time I make something, even the dog doesn’t want it,” the security guard said
“How old are you?” William asked.
“65,” the guard answered.
“Do you have children?” William asked further
“I have a son who’s married. He’s given me a granddaughter. Oh, she’s so well–behaved,” the guard said proudly.
Eloise walked up to them, and William naturally took her hand. “This is my wife
“It’s Ms. Sullivan! Uh, that’s good.” The security guard seemed confused. Eloise had lived in this neighborhood for eight years, but always as Jacob’s girlfriend
“Oh, right. Is that your car?” the guard asked.
William nodded and said, “We’ll be leaving in it now.”
“No problem, I was just wondering. It’s a nice car,” the security guard said.
“It’s decent,” William responded
Eloise looked at the car outside. Although she didn’t know much about cars, she could recognize the emblem–it was a Rolls–Royce.
She wondered how many cars William actually had. Benjamin sometimes drove a black Maybach, other times a white Range Rover, and today it was a Rolls–Royce
She had also heard that the villa they were staying in was the best one in Cloudmere Residence. And he had bought an estate a few days ago.
Eloise was suddenly very curious about his finances. She had thought he was just an employee at his company
“Uh, can I ask you something?” Eloise asked William after they had gotten into the car
William helped her with her seatbelt first, then handed her a a pomegranate the security guard had given him. He kept his eyes on the road as he answered
her, “Go ahead and ask
“You’re working for Robinson Group, right?” Eloise asked.
“That’s a refreshing way to put it,” William said with a smile.
“Are you not?” Eloise was confused
“I guess so.”
William
replied
“Are. Are you in a high position?” Eloise continued with her questions.
“Just at the managerial level,” William answered casually.
“Then.. What’s your annual salary? Eloise asked
“I’ve never calculated it. I’ll get my lawyer to transfer all my assets to your name later, you can help me calculate,” William said.
“No, no, I’m just simply curious,” Eloise quickly explained.
“Curious about what? William wondered.
“Curious if I’ve married someone super rich,” Eloise said. If that were the case, she would feel a bit burdened instead. After all, when Felicia introduced him, she had only mentioned that he worked at a big company with a decent salary and good benefits. That didn’t sound like he was particularly wealthy.
William laughed and said, “It’s too late for regrets.”
Eloise raised an eyebrow. “So, who are you?”
“Do you know Mavis Huntington? William asked.
“Of course,” Eloise replied.
“She’s my mother. My biological mother,” William said.
