Chapter 55
Because of Maureen’s words, the actors and staff who had come to get tea earlier quickly put their cups down, and some even emptied their thermoses.
Surrounded by so many people, with eyes on her and whispers all around, Eloise felt like she was being judged.
“Are you responsible for what you just said?
The voice came from behind, and when Eloise turned around, she saw Mavis walking over with a cold expression. She wore a pale yellow embroidered jacket with cloud patterns and a silver flower skirt underneath.
Her makeup and hair were already done, giving her the air of a noblewoman from ancient times. She looked both elegant and majestic, like a woman from a prestigious family. She exuded a powerful air, like a boss in a black cashmere coat and a teacup in her hand.
She walked straight up to Eloise but kept her gaze fixed on Maureen
“Mavis, you, you’re here.” Maureen quickly forced a smile.
“I’ll ask you again. Are you responsible for what you just said?” Mavis‘ voice was cold.
“What. What did I say?”
Mavis squinted and snorted.
Maureen bit her lip, then tried to act casual. “Oh, Mavis, don’t you know that Eloise is Mr. Robinson’s new lover?”
“ph?
“Well, Mr. Robinson is probably just fooling around. Eloise’s the one at fault. She’s good at seducing men.”
“So, you saw it with your own eyes?”
“Huh?
“Otherwise, it’s just spreading rumors.
Maureen began to panic and quickly shook her head. “I I was just joking.‘
“Huh? Do you joke around to ruin a young woman’s reputation as you please? What’s wrong with your mouth?
Maureen was stunned.
Mavis was of high status but had always been polite to people and never made anyone feel uncomfortable. Yet now, she was publicly scolding Maureen for Eloise.
“If you don’t want to be sued for defamation by my family, you’d better apologize to Ms. Sullivan right now!” Mavis threatened.
Maureen was completely stunned. Was she really going to be sued by the Robinson family for insulting Eloise? The Robinson family and Eloise?
This…
“Eloise.” Maureen took a deep breath and looked at Eloise. “I was just joking earlier. I shouldn’t have said those things.”
Eloise was also a bit confused. She didn’t expect Mavis to stand up for her. But when she thought about it, she realized Mavis wasn’t standing up for her, but rather
“It’s a joke only if both sides think it’s funny. I don’t find your kind of joke funny at all.” Eloise frowned.
“Right. I’m sorry.”
Eloise raised her right hand, pointing to the ring on her middle finger, “I already have a fiancé. Please open your eyes and look carefully. I’ve let you off twice already, including the incident on the island last time.
“Don’t spread rumors about me anymore, or I’ll tear things up, and let’s see who will be the one to lose pride in the end!”
Maureen glanced at the ring on Eloise’s finger and snorted. “The diamond’s pretty big. It’s probably just a few bucks at wholesale price. And you have a flancé? Who would marry you?”
“Ms. Sullivan is so great. Anyone who marries her is lucky. But you.” Mavis sneered. “I heard you’ve been clinging to Liam, so let me make it clear now. There’s no chance for you to marry him!”
Maureen’s face tumed completely ugly, and she stormed off in anger.
Many people were still watching the drama unfold, and Mavis looked at Eloise with satisfaction. “Ms. Sullivan, we met again.”
Eloise felt a little uneasy about Mavis‘ excessive enthusiasm.
“Mavis,” she greeted and thanked Mavis for speaking up for her earlieron.
“Liam doesn’t have the best reputation, but that doesn’t mean people can spread rumors about him.”
