Chapter 28
“Can you keep it down? Sophia’s trying to catch up on sleep,” Jacob said as he walked into the kitchen.
Eloise was a bit surprised to see him at home. Casually, she asked, “Not going to the office today?”
“Day off,” Jacob replied irritably.
“Did you make seafood pasta again this moming?” Eloise glanced at the pot, which still led some leftovers
“Wow! It’s a miracle you can actually cool,” she said with a chuckle. She used to think that he would starve if she didn’t cook for him.
“It’s not as good as yours,” Jacob admitted.
“Oh, what an honor to still get compliments from my ex,” Eloise said sarcastically.
For some reason, Jacob walked over and started washing the dishes from breakfast. Clearly inexperienced, he clumsily dropped a bowl, shattering it.
“My fine porcelain bowl! Eloise cried, heartbroken.
The bowl was part of a matching set–one she had painstakingly picked out. Everything in the kitchen–pots, pans, utensils–had been chosen by her, each piece to her liking
“It’s just a bowl,” Jacob mumbled, crouching down to clean up the shards.
“Clumsy as ever!”
“I said I’ll pay for it!” he snapped.
They exchanged a few barbs, the dynamic oddly reminiscent of old times, until they both realized their relationship had changed.
Eloise tumed away, continuing to chop meat with even more force.
When lunch was ready, Sophia finally came downstairs, looking pale and groggy, as if she hadn’t slept enough. Pregnancy symptoms varied, and for her, fatigue and sleepiness seemed to dominate.
Sophia sat at the dining table, and Eloise served her a bowl of stuffed raviol
“Can you try to be quieter when cooling? You disturbed my sleep,” Sophia complained irritably.
Eloise stifled a laugh and replied, “I can’t help it. I’m naturally noisy in the kitchen“
“I’m pregnant, Eloise. Can’t you show a little consideration?” Sophia snapped.
“I’ll try,”
“Don’t try–you must.” Sophia took a deep breath. “You should leam how to be a proper housekeeper and take good care of your employers”
“Employers? As if this were the olden days and I were a servant.” Eloise rolled her eyes internally.
Sophia took a bite of the stuffed ravioli and frowned. “Did you even add salt?”
“Probably,” Eloise replied nonchalantly.
Sophia took another bite but still found it tasteless. She glanced at Jacob, who was eating heartily, then turned her gaze back to Eloise and noticed the bandage on her finger.
“What happened to your finger?” she asked.
“Oh, I accidentally cut myself while chopping meat,”
at Eloise said casually.
Sophia pursed her lips. “Be more careful next time. Don’t chop off a whole finger.“”
“Didn’t lose a finger, but I did chop off a bit of flesh. It might’ve ended up in the filling.” Eloise said with feigned innocence.
Sophia had just bitten into a stuffed ravioli. Hearing this, she immediately spit it out.
“Y–You! Ugh “Unable to hold it in, Sophia bolted to the bathroom to throw up.
Eloise smirked quietly. In truth, the bandage was from a small cut she had gotten while moving floodog
Be more cateful in the future,” Jacob said, still eating
Eloise turned to him. “Save your concem for someone who needs it. I don’t.”
Jacob finished his bowl of stutted ravioli, stood up, and looked at Eloise with a hint of amusement, “I’m starting to look forward to dinner.”
Eloise nanowed her eyes. “Oh, you’re expecting dinner? Then, I’ll make sure it’s something to remember.”
