Chapter 84
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Enrica glared at him. “Let go of mel
But Miguel didn’t budge. His grip tightened around her wrist. “Don’t think you can pull something like this and win me back We’re over. If you’re that bitter about it, then go compete with Sheila fair and square. No need to stoop so low!”
Enrica almost laughed out of sheet Inistration. Even now, her manners kept her from snapping. She was still clinging to that last shred of dignity. She said, ” Miguel, are you deaf or just plain stupid? How many times do I have to say it? I’m done. I’ve moved on. I don’t love you anymore!”
The words “I don’t love you anymore” hit him like a punch to the chest. His expression went still, the anger frozen there for a beat.
What did Entica just say? She didn’t love him anymore? That couldn’t be right.
Hadn’t she always seen him as her way out? Hadn’t she been obsessed with him?
Just then, another hand suddenly cut in, forceful and certain, knocking Miguel’s hand away and pulling Enrica protectively into a firm embrace.
He snapped back to reality to see Zayne standing there, shielding Enrica with quiet but unmistakable possessiveness. His gaze was cold as ice.
He caught the guarded look behind Zayne’s cold indifference and suddenly laughed. “Zayne, you really think she loves you? She just divorced me and can straight to marry you. You’re nothing but a rebound. She’s using you to get over me.”
Zayne looked down at him with quiet contempt. “Mr. Zucker, aren’t you being a little too confident?
Miguel scoffed. “I’ll admit it you’ve got some ability. Even managed to get on the radar of Mr. Davison from Tennings Insurance. But at the end of the day, you’re still a damn employee. You can’t give her the life she had with me.
“Sooner or later, she’ll see the difference. She’ll realize everything I gave her is something you’ll never be able to provide.”
Zayne’s expression darkened. “I’m curious, Mr. Zucker. What’s the point of saying all this? Do you actually think she’ll wake up one day, realize your “worth,” and come crawling back?”
Miguel’s face twisted into something ugly. “That’s ridiculous.”
Zayne let out a soft scoff. “Well, it’s the way you said it that makes it hard to believe otherwise.
Miguel quickly realized how far he’d gone. Truthfully, he didn’t care about Enrica anymore–not like that. So why had he called out to her? Why waste his time with all these ridiculous accusations?
His face stiffened, and without another word, he tumed and walked off.
Enrica’s phone rang just then. She looked at the caller ID and immediately picked up. “Hello? What’s wrong?”
Zack’s voice came through, lowered but still frantic. “Enrica, are you free right now? I need a favor. Can you come to Easnia and bring some cash? I called Rachel, but she left me high and dry.”
Enrica blinked. “Alright. How much do you need? What happened?
Zack sounded embarrassed. “I took Ms. Garcia out to dinner. I didn’t realize this place out in the suburbs doesn’t take cards–no signal, no didn’t bring enough cash. I just need five thousand dollars or so.”
Enrica chuckled. “Alright, send me the location. I’ll be there soon.”
She hung up and turned to Zayne. “Zack’s out with his girlfriend and ran short on cash. I’m gonna drop some off. You can head home first.”
But Zayne’s expression didn’t change. “I’ll go with you.”
Wi–Fi. And, of course, I
Enrico paused, just about to decline, but he added, “It’s late. It’s not safe for you to be out there alone. If we’re calling a cab anyway, it costs the same for two prople as it does for one.”
She thought about it–be wasn’t wrong. So she nodded, a little sheepish. “Sorry. Looks like I’m dragging you into this again.”
Zayne smiled. “It’s fine.
Not far away, Miguel stood watching them climb into a taxi together. His gaze flickered, and then be flagged down a cab of his own
“Follow that c
