Chapter 45
Wesley’s question came so suddenly that Thomas froze for a moment. Before he could recover, Wesley spoke again. “Sometimes, when there’s no proof, it’s best not to throw around accusations. Don’t you agree. Mr. Field?”
His tone was sharp and controlled, the emotion behind his words unreadable.
“Of course,” Thomas quickly replied.
Amelia also nodded and looked at Wesley, “Sadie and Thomas were probably just too worried.”
“Is that so?” Wesley glanced at her
Amelia felt like something was off. He seemed unusually tense tonight and looked angry.
“It’s getting late. Wesley, Jake, you two should head home and get some rest,” she said with a smile.
“No need to investigate who took Florian?
“He’s home safe. We’ll figure it out in time,”
Wesley said nothing more. He picked up his jacket and turned to leave. Whether intentional or not, the sleeve of his coat brushed against the back of Gemma‘ hunds as he passed her.
She stood still, Jacob watched her, uneasy. “Do you want me to stay a little longer?”
She looked up at him. “Thank you, but there’s no need.”
“Call me if anything happens.”
It was only then that Jarob left with Wesley. After they left, Gemma ignored everyone in the living room. She walked straight toward the stairs. Thomas, anger still simmering in his chest, barked at her. “Stop right there.”
Gemma paused but didn’t tum around.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“It’s almost. I’m going to bed ”
“This is the last time I’m asking, were you behind what happened to Flo today?
A faint smile tugged at her lips. Her voice was calm. “Whether I was or not, you’ve already made up your mind. So there’s no need to ask me.”
Without waiting for his response, she tumed and walked quickly upstairs, leaving Thomas fuming behind her. Back in her room, her phone rang. It was Tracy. After hearing the full story, the two of them fell silent. It was a while before Tracy finally spoke. “Gem, what do you think really happened?”
“What do you think?”
“Staged
Demand let out a quies laugh as she stood before the floor–to–ceiling window, her gaze cold and unreadable as she stared into the night.
