Chapter 2 That Woman From Three Years Ago
Connor remained unfazed. “Why can’t I talk about it? You’re 27 years old, but you have never dated a woman! Putting aside the rumors out there, I have all the reason to suspect you’re either asexual or suffering from erectile dysfunction!
“I’ve visited many doctors around the world for your sake and gathered many hot babes for you. Why do you never appreciate my efforts? I’m worried about you, while you’re so laid back about it!”
Ezra balked at the mentions of asexuality and erectile dysfunction.
He watched the varied emotions on Connor’s face, amused by the workings of Connor’s brain. At the same time, he ignored Connor and sipped on his red wine.
Connor still hadn’t given up on talking some sense into Ezra.
“Ezra, our family is conservative on sexuality, but since you aren’t into women, I will have to accept you being gay on behalf of Dad and Mom.”
Connor’s demeanor gradually shifted from being all serious to ludicrously wiping away his tears.
He even said to Ezra, “Don’t worry. I’ll shoulder the responsibility of continuing the Kinsler bloodline! You enjoy your gay life!”
Ezra was annoyed at Connor’s antics. Connor wasn’t exactly wrong, but his emotional display was so embarrassing.
He ended up slapping the back of Connor’s head.
“What’s with that nonsense? I’m not gay!”
But that begged the question—why did he have an erection before Jordan if he weren’t gay?
He had never felt anything for females who threw themselves at him, be it sexy vixens or pure, innocent ladies. Even if a woman undressed in front of him and tried to seduce him, he wouldn’t be tempted.
But why did he get an erection by holding the waist of that man?
Ezra felt a wave of shock. Was he really gay? It was such a surprise for him.
Connor, who had been slapped on the back of his head, nearly fell out of the couch.
He angrily grumbled, “Ezra, I’m being serious! You’ve been single for 27 years! Have you considered the long future ahead of you? People are more open about sexual orientations in the modern age. Don’t be scared of how people see you! Besides…”
“Stop it, Connor.” Ezra cut him off and fell into deep thoughts.
Connor said no more. The siblings sat in silence for a while, both bored out of their minds.
Connor finally remarked, “Whatever. Stay forever alone if that’s what you want.”
Then, he stormed out of the room.
Connor might have sounded harsh, but he still had a soft spot for his older brother. After some deliberation, he made a call on his phone.
“Remember that man who bumped into Ezra just now? Tell the HR Department to make him stay. As for whether or not he could work for the Kinsler Group… That depends on his luck.”
Ezra held his forehead as he watched Connor leave. He felt troubled.
Connor wasn’t wrong. Humans had carnal desires.
He still had a long life to live; he couldn’t stay single forever. In fact, he wished to spend his life with a partner until he was old and gray.
But Ezra had never developed any interest in a woman over the years. He didn’t have any desire for men too, apart from that exception just now.
He looked up in surprise when he recalled that one woman from three years ago. She was an exception too!
Three years ago, an adorable and shy woman had driven him crazy in bed on a drunken night. He had gone at it with her multiple times, yet he felt insatiable.
Alas, he had not managed to track her down since then.
Sometimes, he questioned if that memory from three years ago was just an illusion. He set down his cup irritably and decided to forget about it.
He was straight. That encounter just now was nothing but an accident.
After Ezra freshened up, he left the room.
He saw Jordan again at the door of his office.
His deep, guttural voice boomed. “What are you doing here?”
Jordan turned around when she heard his voice.
Ezra finally saw Jordan’s face. Her thick brows were slightly arched. She had a pair of doe eyes under her slightly curled lashes. Under her tall button nose was a pair of rosy lips.
Jordan’s face looked soft and fair—a rather feminine-looking man.
Upon seeing her, Ezra couldn’t help but feel his blood rushing down to his groin. Taken aback by his bodily reaction, he hurriedly shut his eyes and adjusted his breathing.
“Mr. Kinsler, sorry for my clumsiness just now.”
Jordan quickly apologized with a light nod when she saw Ezra. After all, she had been in the wrong for bumping into him.
After Ezra cooled down, he stared at the man who apologized to him.
“It’s fine.”
With that, he walked around Jordan and left. He had no intention to engage further with Jordan.
Jordan looked up and saw Ezra walking into the distance. She hurried after him.
“Mr. Kinsler. Um, well…”
He snapped around impatiently and glared at her.
She didn’t expect him to halt abruptly. Once again, she didn’t have time to react. Right when she was about to crash into him, she forced herself to come to a stop just inches before she bumped into his chest.
In close distance, she felt the pressure standing before Ezra, who was over six feet tall. She shuddered a little.
Ezra stood there, frozen, as he watched Jordan almost colliding against him.
“Sorry about that!” Jordan heaved a sigh of relief for not bumping into him. Suddenly, she took a few steps backward after she realized they were too close to each other.
She apologized again.
“What’s the matter? I have a meeting to attend,” he said with rage.
“I’m here for an interview,” she quickly explained while handing him her resume.
He scanned her face and her resume without much expression.
Was this guy here to interview for the role of his special assistant?
The air felt heavy in his silence.
Jordan held out her resume, her hands hanging in the air and her head bowing. She waited for Ezra to take her resume. Never had time passed this slow in her life.
Moments later, Ezra said coldly, “Putting aside your tardiness, do you think you could do well as my special assistant with your clumsiness?”
“I’m not clumsy. Everything that happened was an accident! I was late for a reason—”
“Says everyone in the world who runs late.”
She was taken aback by his witty comeback. He wasn’t wrong. No reason could excuse her for being late. Still, she wanted to fight for a chance.
“Please give me a chance. This is my resume. Please have a look.”
“I don’t have time for that. I’m attending a meeting.”
He turned around to leave. When the elevator doors were about to close, he saw Jordan standing there in dejection.
Suddenly, he felt sorry for her.
The doors slid open again.
He suggested, “Go to the HR Department and see what they have for you.”
Then, he pressed the button to close the elevator doors, vanishing before her eyes.
Ezra had no idea whether or not he had made the right decision when he felt sorry for her. For the first time, he felt confused as he stared at his clear reflection on the elevator wall. It was a feeling he hated.
Hearing that, Jordan smiled. Her reply echoed in the empty corridor. “Got it!”
…
At Joseph’s office, he asked, “Did Mr. Kinsler really say that?”
“Yeah. I would never lie about his orders.” Jordan stared calmly at Joseph.
Joseph mused over the underlying meaning of Ezra’s statement. At the same time, he remembered what Connor had said to him.
So, the decision was final. Jordan was to stay. The question was the role they would offer to her.
“We have very few openings this year. So far, all we have left is the role of the administrative clerk in the Marketing Department. Think over it.”
Um, an administrative clerk sounded like a role that had to deal with miscellaneous trivial tasks.
Jordan was reluctant to take up the offer.
“Mr. Klein, I know that the Kinsler Group has a special marketing team to work on campaign planning. Do you accept new members to that team?”
Joseph smiled knowingly at Jordan’s strategy—to land a job in Kinsler Group first before building a career.
“Technically, we do not allow that. But the team welcomes new ideas from anyone if it ever runs into problems.”
Taking a deep breath, Jordan came to a decision. “Good. I will take you up on your offer.”
She didn’t mind climbing the career ladder. It was notoriously hard to get a job in Kinsler Group. So, she had decided to take any role and proceed from there.
“That works. You will go through three months of probation. Once you pass the probation period, you’ll be a full-time employee. Now, get the paperwork sorted out.”
“Sure. Thank you, Mr. Klein.”
Jordan left the Kinsler Group building happily.
Ezra watched her walk out of the entrance from his glass window with complicated feelings. He wondered if he’d ever have to work with Jordan in the future, and if so, would he ever cross his bottom line?
