Chapter 8
Avery initially planned to refuse the birthday party. But when her gaze fell on the invitation in Cassandra’s hand, she changed her mind.
“Since you’re organizing a birthday party for me, have you prepared my gift?”
Howard was caught off guard by Avery’s sudden change of attitude but quickly recovered. “Oh, of course! But I can’t tell you what it is now. You’ll see it when you come home.”
Avery wasn’t buying it. “Have someone bring me the Gin Root, and I’ll return.”
Howard fell silent for a moment. Then, he said awkwardly, “Ave, it’s not that I don’t want to give it to you…‘
“Then forget it.” Avery hung up the phone immediately.
Cassandra looked at her with some concern. “Was that a call from home?”
Avery chuckled coldly. “Yeah. They’re planning to throw me a birthday party. But when I asked for the Gin Root as a gift, they couldn’t part with it.”
“So, are you going back?”
Avery yawned and replied lazily, “If they bring me the Gin Root, then I will. Otherwise, forget
it.”
After all, she had always been the rebellious, unreasonable woman in everyone’s eyes. Since her image was already set, she might as well live up to it.
When night came, Howard had ordered the butler to deliver the Gin Root.
Avery inspected it carefully and happily accepted it after confirming that it wasn’t a fake.
She instructed the butler to tell Howard she would return the next evening.
The Gin Root was large and ancient, a rare treasure. Howard was willing to part with it to get her to go back, which clearly showed he had made plans.
However, she wasn’t someone to be messed with. If she wasn’t happy, no one would have an Pasy time!
The next evening, Avery returned to the Sinclair residence. As soon as she reached the door, someone dressed in pink came running toward her. Before Avery could react, she was unexpectedly pulled into a hug
“You must be my sister, Avery, right? Mom and Dad prepared a ton of delicious food. They’ve
been waiting for you to come back!”
Then, Abigail tried to pull Avery along. “Let’s go! Mom and Dad are waiting!”
Avery looked at Abigail’s beaming face, looking like she had seen a ghost. “Did you get struck by lightning and lose your mind?”
usay that to me?”
Abigail looked at Avery with a pitiful expression. “Avery, how could you say
Avery looked at the red rims around Abigail’s eyes and let out a sigh of relief. She had thought that Abigail had done too many wicked things and had been struck by lightning, turning her into an idiot. But she realized she was overthinking it.
Avery shoved Abigail aside and walked into the house, but Abigail followed her like a piece of gum stuck to a shoe.
She even reached out to try and loop her arm around Avery’s, but Avery shook her off.
Abigail stumbled back several steps and nearly fell onto the ground.
She protected her head with her hands, and her voice choked with tears as she pleaded, “I’m sorry! I won’t touch your arm again. Please don’t hit me!”
“You’re bullying your sister again?” Molly wore a dark expression as she walked toward them.
Abigail immediately ran and hid behind her.
Molly looked at Avery with disappointment in her eyes. “Abigail was very ill a few days ago and doesn’t remember anything. How can you not care about her as her sister? You’re even hitting her?”
“She doesn’t remember anything?” Avery laughed. “But she seems just the same to me.”
Molly felt irritated by her retort. She raised her hand, preparing to strike Avery. But before she could land her hand on Avery, a voice stopped her. “Enough!”
Howard walked up to them while pushing a wheelchair with a man in gray loungewear sitting in it. Two assistants followed, each holding a gift.
Molly wanted to protest but stopped when she saw Howard and the man approaching. She quickly plastered on a warm smile. “Mr. Alston, it’s windy outside. Please come inside.”
Then, she turned her head to shoot a venomous glance at Avery, “Why are you still standing there? Hurry up and bring Mr. Alston in!‘
The man in the wheelchair was none other than James Alston, the youngest son of the Alston family and Avery’s male best friend.
James signaled his two assistants, who then stepped forward to hand the gifts in their hands. to Molly.
Molly said with an embarrassed look, “How could we let you spend so much?”
DUYE
While that was what she said, the smile on her face deepened.
James gave a small smile. “It’s just a little gift. Mrs. Sinclair, if you don’t accept it, I’ll be too embarrassed to ever visit again.”
Howard was about to push James inside, but he shook his head. “I won’t be going in. Before this, Ave gave my mother some headache medicine, and she said it was very effective. So, she wanted me to ask Ave to prescribe her a few more doses. Ave, can you
Hearing that, Howard immediately chimed in, “Mrs. Alston’s health is important. Ave, go ahead.”
Once they were in James‘ car, Avery lowered the window and took a deep breath. The air out here felt so much better compared to the pretentious atmosphere in the Sinclair residence.
James chuckled at her expression. “I rushed here as soon as I got back to save your ass. How are you going to thank me, young lady?”
Avery waved her hand dramatically and replied in a generous tone, “Let’s go to Velvet Lounge! I’ll hire ten male models for you to have fun with!”
James liked men. He and Avery were high school classmates. Back then, whenever she got into trouble, he always took the fall for her. They were separated when he went abroad to follow his “true love“.
After hearing Avery’s suggestion, James‘ lips twitched.
He paused before reminding her kindly, “Velvet Lounge is my family’s business.”
Avery nodded. “I know. That’s why we’re going. With you around, I won’t have to pay.”
James couldn’t stop himself from giving her a huge eye roll before giving instructions to the driver, “Take us to Tom’s.”
Avery huffed. “Fine, Tom’s it is. I can afford it!”
James laughed at her pout. “Alright, I won a lottery ticket today. I’ll treat you.’
Suddenly, Avery turned to him with a curious look. “How did you know I came back home today?”
“I went to find you, but you weren’t there. I heard you were home, and I was worried you’d be bullied. So, I decided to come save you. I ran into your dad on the way, so we were together.”
Avery looked at James disapprovingly. “Who said I’d be bullied?”
“Alright, alright. I misspoke,” James quickly corrected himself when he saw Avery’s displeased look.
As they spoke, the car arrived at Tom’s.
