Chapter 29
Joshua’s gaze was deep, almost magnetic, drawing Avery in, making it hard to look away. The two of them stared at each other for a long time until Joshua suddenly pulled her into his arms. Before she could react, he leaned down and kissed her.
His kiss was intense, as if he were trying to steal her breath. His hands tightened around her waist, holding her in place, not allowing her to escape.
Unprepared, Avery had no choice but to endure passively. The kiss left her breathless, turning her face red from the lack of air. Finally, he pulled away, leaving her gasping for air.
She leaned against him, trying to recover. Her lips burned from the kiss, the pain a sharp reminder of everything that had just happened. Instinctively, she tried to pull away, but his
arms tightened around her waist, holding her in place.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked in a low, almost hoarse voice, as if struggling to
control himself.
She fought harder to free herself. “Let go of me!”
“You took my cigarette, and now I’m just asking for a little compensation. That’s not unreasonable, is it?” He reached down to pick up the cigarette that had fallen to the ground
and tossed it in the trash.
Finally, she was free. She quickly got up, distancing herself, and watched him warily.
Seeing her like this, he couldn’t help but smirk. He stood and walked over to her. “Come on, he said, taking her hand and leading her outside.
She tried to break free, but after several failed attempts, she gave up and let him guide her.
As they stepped into the garden, the strong scent of herbs immediately caught her attention. She looked around the garden, which was filled with rare medicinal plants, feeling a bit
overwhelmed.
Did he grow all these herbs? Even if his health was fragile and he needed medicine often, it
seemed excessive to have a whole garden of it.
“What do you think?” he asked, watching her closely.
“I didn’t expect this,” Avery said, her curiosity piqued. “Did you grow all these herbs because you’re interested in traditional medicine?”
He shook his head. “No, I just like the scent.” As he spoke, his expression softened slightly, his gaze growing distant for a moment.
The girl who had rescued him years ago after he fell into the water smelled just like this–of
herbs.

Avery nodded, understanding, but didn’t ask any more questions. She was fascinated by the array of herbs in the garden, many of which she had only read about in books.
“I usually have the maids look after the garden, but they don’t know much, and they’ve killed quite a few plants,” Joshua continued. “If you have the time, maybe you could come by and teach them how to take care of the plants.”
She eagerly agreed, “Sure!”
How could she not agree to such a rare opportunity?
After leaving the garden, Joshua led her to his study. Just as they reached the door, Delcan arrived, his expression serious. “Mr. Smith, Mr. Nathan is here.”
Upon hearing this, Joshua’s face immediately darkened. “What does he want?”
“He said he wants to see you.”
