“Well, if that’s the case, let’s go get our marriage certificate first. That way, you can conveniently plan your husband’s murder later,” Joshua said, starting the car with a smirk.
Avery’s expression changed immediately. She should have known he wouldn’t back down so easily. He had set a trap, just waiting for her to fall into it. He was such a cunning fox.
Though frustrated, she sighed, knowing that she couldn’t do anything. With a bright, slightly apologetic smile, she turned to him and said, “But we agreed to wait until my face heals before getting the certificate.”
“I’ve changed my mind.”
He didn’t even look at her, which made her feel like she was throwing flirtatious glances at a blind man. She sighed in defeat, about to come up with another excuse when he spoke up first.
“My driving skills aren’t great. If you don’t want to die, don’t make any sudden moves. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee your safety.”
She was so angry she almost wanted to curse him out. But since she was still in the car, she swallowed her words and instead suggested, trying to keep her tone calm, “Well, if your driving skills aren’t the best, maybe you should get a chauffeur, since-”
“A chauffeur?” His tone became a bit strange. “Are you sure?”
She nodded, though she couldn’t understand why he’d ask that.
“If you don’t mind having someone standing outside the car at certain times, I’m fine with it,
he added.
Her face flushed again. He caught her embarrassment and chuckled lightly. “You were the one who suggested I get a chauffeur just a minute ago. Why are you blushing?”

Avery’s lips moved, as if to say something, but found no words to counter him. Instead, she leaned back, closed her eyes, and pretended to sleep.
Seeing her act like a frightened quail, Joshua didn’t push it further and focused on driving.
After a while, Avery felt a little tired from the earlier events. She shifted, finding a more comfortable position, and asked with her eyes closed, “Where are we going?”
“To get our marriage certificate.” His answer was blunt and direct.
“Wait, really?” She straightened up in alarm.
He didn’t respond, keeping his attention on the road.
Seeing him so focused, she started to panic. “You promised me! How can you back out now?”

Still, he remained silent.
“Mr. Smith, darling! You promised!” she said again, half–pleading, half–exasperated.
“I’m taking you home,” he finally replied in a softer tone.
She let out a breath of relief when she heard it wasn’t about the marriage certificate. She looked out the window, confused. “This isn’t the way to the clinic.”
Again, the only response was silence.
She felt a bit awkward but didn’t push further. As long as they weren’t going to get their marriage certificate, it didn’t matter where they were headed. She was an adult now, and if he tried to sell her off, she’d find a way to escape.
After all, he wasn’t the type to care about the petty money he’d get from selling her. But then again, when he said he was taking her home, was he talking about the Smith residence instead of the clinic?
