Chapter 16
Laurelle said, “You bumped into someone but didn’t even offer a hand. Then, instead of
apologizing, you scared her even more. Look at her–she’s terrified!” With that, she went over to help the woman up.
The woman, hearing Laurelle speak up for her, burst into tears again. She was even louder this
time.
Seeing this, Abigail frowned. She quickly walked over to the woman, her face full of concern. Ms. Shaw, are you alright? Avery’s just in a bad mood today and accidentally ran into you. I apologize on her behalf.”
Avery couldn’t help but chuckle at Abigail’s comment. “Abigail, you weren’t even here when it happened, so how do you know it was me who bumped into her?”
“Ms. Avery, it’s all my fault. You can punish me however you like, just please don’t blame Ms. Abigail any longer.”
The woman began crying even harder. Maybe it was the emotion in her voice, but Abigail’s eyes started to well up too. To any bystander, these two were picture–perfect victims. Laurelle shot Abigail a look of sympathy.
“Honestly, you’re so unlucky for being stuck with a sister like this. Not only does she ignore all the nice things you do for her, but she turns around and makes you the villain.”
Abigail kept the tears brimming in her eyes as she managed a smile. “Avery’s just in a bad mood today; normally, she wouldn’t treat me like this.”
Avery watched the three of them perform their little act. Honestly, she was almost ready to applaud. With that level of acting, she might just feel bad for them if they didn’t win an award. Abigail got someone to help Danielle Shaw, the young woman, go change. Then, she walked back to Avery with a concerned expression. “Avery, your clothes got dirty too. You should change as well.”

Just then, Molly arrived to find her precious daughter standing beside Avery with red–rimmed eyes, murmuring something quietly. Hearing people nearby gossiping about what had just happened, Molly’s expression turned dark with anger. She stormed over and slapped Avery across the face without hesitation.
“How did I end up with a daughter who can’t tell right from wrong? Abigail tried to help you, but you bullied her. Are you even human?”
Her nails scraped Avery’s cheek as her hand landed, leaving a bright red scratch. Blood started trickling down Avery’s face, dripping slowly. It added a rather unsettling look to her expression.
Seeing the blood, Molly felt a moment of shock. She was about to step closer to check Avery’s face when she suddenly started laughing.
Molly looked at Avery’s injured face, and a flicker of guilt passed over her expression. She softened her tone just slightly. “If you hadn’t infuriated me like that, I wouldn’t have had to hit you.”
She motioned for one of the maids to take Avery to clean up her wound. Avery laughed louder at this. She covered her cheek with a hand, the sting from Molly’s slap only emphasizing everything that had just happened.
“You said I’m not human,” she replied with a biting smile. “Don’t forget–I’m your daughter! If I’m not human, what does that make you?”
She looked at Molly with sarcasm.
A sudden silence fell over the room.
Everyone around stared at Avery in shock, unable to believe she’d say something so brazen in front of everyone.
Molly’s face went red with rage, her whole body shaking. She pointed a finger at Avery, struggling to even find her words.
Abigail rushed to Molly’s side to pat her back and calm her. “Mom, don’t be upset. I’m sure Avery didn’t mean it like that.”
