Chapter 13
Avery calling Clyde her “big nephew” instantly made his expression gloomy.
He took a deep breath and stared at Avery. “I’m here to take you to the Sinclair residence.”
With that, he reached out to grab her, but she dodged him.
A hint of impatience flashed in Clyde’s eyes, but he still forced himself to speak in a calm tone, “I know you’re upset because I’m with Abby. But it’s been several days now. Don’t you think it’s enough of a tantrum?”
Avery laughed at his words.
Just as she was about to speak, he continued, “At the party today, I’ll announce that we’re going to have our wedding again. After we’re married, I’ll arrange for Abby to stay outside. That should satisfy you, right?”
Avery looked at him with pity in her eyes. “Did your Uncle Joshua scare you yesterday until you’ve gone stupid?”
Then, she sighed and added, “You’re still so young, and your brain has already fried. What will you do in the future?”
Clyde’s anger boiled over, and he clenched his fists tightly, making cracking sounds. He forced the words out from between his gritted teeth, “Avery, don’t push your luck with me!”
Avery didn’t get angry. Instead, she smiled and asked him, “Is this how you speak to your elder
“Elders?” Clyde seemed to have heard a ridiculous joke. “You don’t really think my uncle would actually marry you, do you?”
He looked Avery up and down, then sneered, “I’ll tell you the truth. Uncle Joshua already has someone in his heart. If you didn’t look somewhat like her, he wouldn’t even bother with you.”
Avery froze for a moment.
She had always wondered why Joshua, who was usually so cold and indifferent, would behave so recklessly with her at the wedding, especially knowing that she was his nephew’s fiancé.
After hearing Clyde’s words, she understood–it was because she looked like his beloved!
Seeing Avery fall silent, a smug smile appeared on Clyde’s face. “If you follow me, once I inherit my family business, you’ll be the legitimate Mrs. Smith. But if you stick with Uncle Joshua–when his true love comes back… Well, I’m sure you can figure out what will happen.”
Avery lowered her head. Despite trying to hold back, her lips couldn’t help but curl into a smile.
She was curious how Clyde could say such things so shamelessly.

He was still talking about inheriting the family business?
Everyone in Starbury knew that his father, Nathan, was an illegitimate son born from an affair Samson had while his wife was pregnant.
If it weren’t for Louisa’s mercy, Nathan might not even have had the right to carry the Smith family name.
Samson had always been distant from Nathan because of his guilt toward Louisa. Only after Clyde, the eldest grandson, was born did Samson’s attitude toward him begin to warm.
When Clyde saw Avery remain silent, he assumed he had managed to convince her. He looked pleased with himself and added, “Men of status always have plenty of beautiful women around them. Besides, Abby is your sister. She’s so kind, so she’ll never hurt you.”
Avery couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
To be able to make an affair sound so reasonable, she wasn’t sure whether to insult or to
admire his shamelessness.
Seeing her laugh, Clyde thought she had agreed, and he became even more smug. “Since you’ve made up your mind, hurry up and get in the car. I still need to prepare a surprise for Abby. I don’t have time to waste with you here!”
Avery looked at him as if he were an idiot.
“My big nephew, you should go
to the hospital if you can’t think straight. If you don’t have money for medical help, I can lend you 200 dollars.”
Clyde raised his hand as if to slap her. But before he could, Avery snorted coldly and struck first, slapping him across the face.
The sound of her slap echoed loudly, stunning even Clyde himself. He covered his face, and it took him a moment to react.
“Y–You dare hit me?”
Avery shook her sore wrist and took out a tissue from her bag. Then, she wiped her hand while looking at Clyde with disdain. “You really have thick skin. My hand hurts from slapping you.”
Clyde was so furious that his face turned pale. He raised his hand to strike back but froze when his gaze landed on the bangle on Avery’s right wrist. Then, he dropped his hand that was hanging mid–air.
He glared at her. “I’ll wait for the day when you come begging me on your knees.”
Then, he hurriedly left.
Avery watched him leave and rolled her eyes dramatically.
What an annoyance–ruining her mood so early in the morning!

After waiting a while longer, Cassandra arrived to pick Avery up. The two of them chatted and laughed the whole car ride to the Sinclair residence.
When they arrived, Molly was already at the door, greeting guests along with Abigail by her side.
Upon seeing Avery arriving late, Molly immediately opened her mouth to lecture her.
But before she could say anything, Cassandra cut in, “Mrs. Sinclair, I noticed Abigail is dressed more extravagantly than Ave. If anyone didn’t know better, they would think she was the star of the show today.”
Molly’s face showed a flash of embarrassment. “Abby is still young and loves pretty clothes.. And besides, Avery is her elder sister. She won’t mind such trivial matters.”
As she spoke, she shot a look at Avery, signaling her to agree.
But Avery ignored her and instead pulled Cassandra into the house.
“Well, to put it simply, she’s using my birthday as an excuse to matchmake her precious adopted daughter. Let’s just entertain her.” Avery’s voice wasn’t low, and many guests around overheard.
Immediately, many people turned to look, whispering among themselves.
“I didn’t realize until Ms. Clay mentioned it. Ms. Abigail is dressed too flashily. If I didn’t know ⚫ better, I would actually think she was the real start of the show today.”
“Avery is so pitiful. Her marriage was ruined by her adoptive sister, and now, even her birthday is being overshadowed.”
“Avery mentioned that the family is going to find a match for Abigail. It seems the Smith family is really determined to keep her from marrying into their family.”
Abigail’s eyes reddened instantly after hearing the gossip around her.
She bit her lip tightly and tried to hold back tears, but they spilled down her face anyway.
Molly saw her beloved daughter crying and felt an aching pain in her heart. She immediately pulled Abigail into her arms and gently comforted her, “Abby, don’t listen to these people. Your father and I will make sure you marry into the Smith family with dignity.”
As she spoke, she tenderly wiped the tears from Abigail’s eyes. It was such a loving scene that portrayed maternal love.
Abigail cried in Molly’s arms for a while before gradually calming down.
She wiped her tears and said to Molly, “Mom, I’ll go and apologize to Avery. Today is her birthday, and I want to make sure she’s happy.”
With that, she turned to look for Avery.
Avery immediately frowned when she saw Abigail approaching her.
Before she could figure out what Abigail was up to, Abigail suddenly kneeled before her.
