I had just sent the message when Levi walked over and asked, “Didn’t you hear what I said just now, Jane? What’s keeping you so busy. huh? Why are you so distracted right now?”
I was about to put my phone away when it started ringing. Levi and I both glanced at the screen, where the name “Jeremiah” popped up. Levi immediately widened his eyes, his fists tightening in anger. “Why is that lousy scumbag calling you? Is he coming up with new ways to mess with you, Jane? You have nothing to worry about! I’ll help you get back at him!”
Before I could respond, Levi hit the answer button and put the call on speaker. Jeremiah’s furious voice immediately rang out from the phone.
“You’ve truly gone too far, Jane! We haven’t even finalized our divorce yet, and you’re already getting cozy with Eric Flint. Do you really think I’ll let you get away with this?
“I’ve already consulted with my lawyer. I can make this divorce process last forever if I want to. If you continue messing around with other men, I’ll make sure you never get out of this marriage.”
I had completely overlooked this. If Jeremiah were to use the fact that Eric and I had hugged the previous night, it would undoubtedly strengthen his position in the divorce proceedings. I had clearly made a grave error in judgment.
I was on the verge of responding when Levi interjected with derision, saying, “It’s none of your business who Jane’s with. You’re nothing but a lousy scumbag–you don’t deserve Jane! I’m warning you, if you keep bothering her, I won’t hesitate to break those legs of yours!”
After a brief silence, Jeremiah roared, “You’re such a slut, Jane! You’re already with Eric, yet you’re still messing around with other men. I bet you’ve already had your other partners lined up before we even finalized our divorce. I used to feel guilty about our marriage, but now, I realize you don’t deserve my forgiveness at all!”
I couldn’t help but scoff at Jeremiah’s remarks, thinking that I never wanted his forgiveness to begin with. What made him think he was worthy of offering it?
I couldn’t be bothered by Jeremiah’s nagging, so I hung up on him and blocked his number. I felt so much better after doing so.
