Chapter 37
I calmly sat down and had a sip of water. “So? Would you like to explain yourselves?”
Teremiah was about to speak when I cut him off, “Hey, please don’t tell me that this is all take. Anyone who digs a little deeper will find out that Cornell Group’s deficit is more than just a few million dollars.”
Jeremiah became quiet after hearing my words. He was clenching his fists tightly.
Quinton turned livid. He was stunned beyond words, and he glared at me like he wanted to swallow me whole.
Unbothered, I flashed him a smile, silently taunting him.
Dad flipped through the documents, and his expression quickly darkened.
“I get it now. No wonder the funds we invested in the early stages showed little progress. I only gave you this project because of the ties between our tamilies. I can’t believe that you were actually scheming against us!”
Quinton tried to explain the situation. “Tim, this is a misunderstanding! L…”
“Misunderstanding? What misunderstanding? Even if it were, this partnership is highly risky! We’ll never work with you again!”
Dad’s temper flared up, and he immediately called for security to throw both Jeremiah and Quinton out of the house.
I casually stood at the back as I watched both father and son getting kicked out by security.
It was likely that Quinton had never faced such humiliation in his life. Anger and embarrassment flashed across his face. Before stepping into his car, he turned around and pointed at our door in a rage. “You Browns are just too much!” he roared.
“Since you’re showing no mercy, then don’t blame us for being ruthless as well. We’ll make sure the whole world knows about Jane’s infidelity! Just wait for your family to be the target of gossip!”
After delivering his threat, Quinton angrily stepped into his car and drove off in a huff.
Dad was seething in anger, and he almost could not catch his breath. Mom quickly patted his chest. “Tim, calm down! Don’t get mad!”
I hurried over to help him onto the couch and poured him a glass of water. “Dad, are you okay? Are you feeling better?”
Dad’s breathing slowly became steady, and he nodded. He looked at me with a worried frown on his face. “Tane, I’m fine. The most important thing Is your reputation”
Mom sighed. “Now that we’ve blown things up, Quinton won’t let this slide so easily. We can’t stand by and let him slander you.”
They said a person’s true character was revealed in tough times. In the face of an impending storm of criticism, my parents still cared about me. If there weren’t others around, I would’ve thrown myself into their arms and bawled like a baby.
Speaking of others….
I turned around and took a look at Elsa, who had been sitting silently in the corner of the couch the entire time. “You were the one who told Quinton about my pregnancy, right?” I calmly asked.
“Huh?” Elsa had a confused look on her face. From her expression, I knew she was about to deny it
I was not about to give her that opportunity. “I know Jeremiah too well. A prideful man like him would never reveal that his wife cheated on him, not even to his family. He’s a grown man. Having his father step in on his behalf would only make him look even more pathetic.
“Also, I remember you went to the Cornells‘ home yesterday. That was when you told them, right?” I continued.
I laid everything bare in one breath. Elsa was stumped, unable to respond.
Mom and Dad turned their gaze to her, waiting for her answer. Even Jack was visibly shocked as he stared at her.
