Chapter 25 Wronged
I walked up to the bed and looked down at Elsa with a meaningful gaze. “What’s wrong? You’re bold enough to tamper with the juice, yet you don’t have the courage to admit to it?”
It was time to tear away her mask of false innocence.
Elsa met my gaze with a flash of panic, but she quickly covered it up with a weak fake smile.”
What are you talking about, Jane? I don’t understand.”
Still playing dumb, huh? A cold glint flashed in my eyes. “Fine. Let me make it clear to you. That
glass of juice-”
Before I could expose the truth, Elsa cut me off and said, “I juiced overripe fruits, and that’s why I
got a stomach ache,”
She fidgeted with her fingers nervously, looking like a remorseful child. Then, she turned to Mom
and Dad.
“I thought the fruits weren’t spoiled and didn’t want them to go to waste, so I juiced them. It’s all my fault that I got a stomach ache. Jane has nothing to do with this. The doctor checked, and you
can ask him if you don’t trust me. This has nothing to do with Jane.”
Elsa acted like she was desperate to defend me. It felt almost as if she couldn’t bear to see me
wrongly accused.
I narrowed my eyes and watched her act.
Instead of feeling relief at her words, Jack called for the doctor to confirm. The doctor handed over
the report and explained, “The patient did consume food that wasn’t fresh, but there’s nothing to
worry about now that she’s gotten her stomach pumped.
“If you’re still concerned, you can keep her in the hospital for observation for a couple of days.”
Jack and Jeremiah had no choice but to believe his words as there was the medical report as
evidence. Elsa silently exhaled in relief.‘
My attention remained on her the entire time, so I didn’t miss her subtle gestures. The corners of my lips curled into a deep smile. It seemed she had anticipated this outcome.
She must’ve arranged for the fake medical report in advance just in case the truth about the drugs
came to light. After all, it could expose Jeremiah to the fact that I was pregnant.
She had gone to great lengths to protect my pregnancy.
I glanced at the report and chose not to expose her lies. Instead, I smiled brightly and reminded
her, “Don’t save on fruits. You might save a few dollars, but it could cost your life.”
Chapje Wronged
Else swallowed nervously and forced herself to stay calm by clenching her hands. She weakly
replied, “I understand. It’s my fault. I’m sorry for all the trouble.”
Her eyes reddened as if she were about to cry again I rolled my eyes and snapped, “Save those
tears. No one’s blaming you for it, so what’s the crying for? Trying to act pitiful, are you?”
I didn’t expose her because I wanted to see what tricks she’d pull next, but I didn’t have the patience to watch her put on an act to garner pity.
My blunt remark left Elsa stunned. Her tears teetered on the edge of spilling but never fell. She looked all the more pitiful.
Jeremiah opened his mouth as if to defend her, but he ended up swallowing his words with my
parents around.
The project between Cornell Group and Brown Group was still in jeopardy. He wouldn’t risk it by
openly siding with Elsa.
While Jeremiah refrained from speaking, Jack had no such reservations. “Why are you being so harsh when Elsa wasn’t badmouthing you? When are you going to fix that nasty temper of yours?”
Just after he spoke, Dad chimed in with a stern tone, “And you have the nerve to lecture Jae? You wanted to call the police without understanding what happened! Now that you’ve wronged her,
apologize!”
Mom joined in the scolding.
I crossed my arms calmly and waited for his apology.
