Chapter 19
It was clear that Adeline wanted to sever all ties with Sullivan, and that made his heart sting with pain. A bittemess filled his mouth as the words he wanted to say got stuck in his throat.
It took him a great deal of effort to say, “Maddie, I was too stubbom back then. I refused to accept our relationship because it started off as a transaction. But once I found out you’d died, I finally realized just how foolish I’d been. You have to believe me, Maddie. I really do love you—
Adeline interrupted, asking, “You love me, and?”
Instead of continuing her attempts to correct the way Sullivan addressed her, she chose to skip ahead to the other topic.
Sullivan froze, not quite understanding her question.
With both her face and voice devoid of any emotion, Adeline continued, “Can’t you see what’s going on? If Madeleine Emerson continues to be involved with Sullivan Carter in any way, death is the only thing that awaits her. I doubt you haven’t noticed anything strange at all.”
Adeline had seen what happened back on the flight.
Thus, she had a feeling that even if Sullivan didn’t know he was a character in a novel or that she nearly fainted because her memories had been thrown into chaos because of him, the fact that he couldn’t speak when he wanted to should’ve been enough for him to realize something was amiss
Sullivan recalled the strange feeling he had of someone blatantly controlling him. His lips parted, but nothing came out. He had indeed sensed that unknown power, but he refused to accept it.
He had someone that he loved, and he didn’t want to be forced down a path without her being a part of it.
He immediately paused after the first syllable as he recalled what Adeline said earlier.
Death was the only thing that awaited Madeleine if she continued to be involved with him. Thus, he forced himself to change the form of address he used.
Looking into Adeline’s eyes, he firmly declared, “Wait for me, Addie. I’ll see to it that I can be with you without any obstacles. Once that day comes, no one will be
able to separate us anymore.
Startled by his bold declaration, Adeline fell into a dazed silence. A day when no one would be able to separate them? Could that truly happen?
Could there be a day where she wouldn’t be controlled by the plot, her memories wouldn’t be wiped, and she wouldn’t have to watch as Sullivan tell in love with someone else?
Adeline thought she had already made her peace and could accept the plot’s outcome, but after hearing what Sullivan said, she couldn’t resist teeling a sense of
She watched as he left after saying his piece, but in the end, she lowered her head and murmured wistfully, “But Sullivan, I’ve waited for you for years and years. and I still don’t know it you really love me.
“Have you merely mistaken obsession for love? Why else have I never sensed that you had any feelings for me…”
Once everything fell silent, Frank and there looking rather forlom
d Cynthia stuck their heads out to check on the situation in the living rooms. Their hearts ached when they saw Adeline sitting
They rushed downstairs and approached her to console her, saying, “What’s the matter, Maddie? Did you two have a tight?
Adeline had been feeling a little down, but the sound of Cynthia’s gentle voice made her choke with emotion. She burled her head in Cynthia’s arms and started crying her heart out.
Frank and Cynthia didn’t know what happened, so they didn’t know how to comfort her. After exchanging a look of similar confusion, they both looked away gently tned to console Adeline as they waited for her to feel better.
After a few minutes, Adeline was done crying. Still holding onto Cynthia, she lifted her tear–streaked face slightly and asked, “Mom, Dad, what do you think I should do it that dream I had is true?
Only then did they realize she was still frightened because of the dreams, and the revelation somewhat amused them.
It was already preposterous enough that she had faked her death and lived abroad for live years all because of a dream. Now that she had finally decided to come back, she was still haunted by the dream.
However, when they saw the aggrieved look in Adeline’s eyes, they quickly put on a solemn expression and propised, “Don’t be scared, Maddie. No matter what happens, we’ll be with you.”
